О таковѣ́мъ похвалю́ся: о себѣ́ же не похвалю́ся, то́кмо о не́мощехъ мои́хъ.

А́ще бо восхощу́ похвали́тися, не бу́ду безу́менъ, и́стину бо реку́: щажду́ же, да не [ка́ко] кто́ вознепщу́етъ о мнѣ́ па́че, е́же ви́дитъ мя́, или́ слы́шитъ что́ от мене́.

И за премно́гая открове́нiя да не превозношу́ся, даде́ся ми́ па́костникъ пло́ти, а́ггелъ сатани́нъ, да ми́ па́кости дѣ́етъ, да не превозношу́ся.

О се́мъ трикра́ты Го́спода моли́хъ, да отсту́питъ от мене́,

и рече́ ми: довлѣ́етъ ти́ благода́ть Моя́: си́ла бо Моя́ въ не́мощи соверша́ется. Сла́дцѣ у́бо похвалю́ся па́че въ не́мощехъ мои́хъ, да всели́тся въ мя́ си́ла Христо́ва.

зна́менiя бо апо́столова содѣ́яшася въ ва́съ во вся́цѣмъ терпѣ́нiи, въ зна́менiихъ и чудесѣ́хъ и си́лахъ.

Что́ бо е́сть, его́же лиши́стеся па́че про́чихъ церкве́й, ра́звѣ то́чiю я́ко а́зъ са́мъ не стужи́хъ ва́мъ? Дади́те ми́ непра́вду сiю́.

Се́ тре́тiе гото́въ е́смь прiити́ къ ва́мъ, и не стужу́ ва́мъ: не ищу́ бо ва́шихъ, но ва́съ. Не до́лжна бо су́ть ча́да роди́телемъ сниска́ти имѣ́нiя, но роди́теле ча́домъ.

А́зъ же въ сла́дость иждиву́ и иждиве́нъ бу́ду по душа́хъ ва́шихъ, а́ще и изли́шше ва́съ любя́, ме́нше люби́мь е́смь.

Бу́ди же, а́зъ не отягчи́хъ ва́съ, но кова́ренъ сы́й, ле́стiю ва́съ прiя́хъ.

Еда́ ко́имъ от по́сланныхъ къ ва́мъ лихои́мствовахъ ва́съ?

Умоли́хъ Ти́та, и съ ни́мъ посла́хъ бра́та: еда́ лихои́мствова чи́мъ ва́съ Ти́тъ? Не тѣ́мже ли ду́хомъ ходи́хома? Не тѣ́миже ли стопа́ми?

Па́ки ли мните́, я́ко отвѣ́тъ ва́мъ твори́мъ? Предъ Бо́гомъ, о Христѣ́ глаго́лемъ: вся́ же, возлю́бленнiи, о ва́шемъ созида́нiи и утвержде́нiи.

Знаю человека во Христе, который назад тому четырнадцать лет (в теле ли – не знаю, вне ли тела – не знаю: Бог знает) восхищен был до третьего неба.

И знаю о таком человеке (только не знаю – в теле, или вне тела: Бог знает),

что он был восхищен в рай и слышал неизреченные слова, которых человеку нельзя пересказать.

Таким человеком могу хвалиться; собою же не похвалюсь, разве только немощами моими.

Впрочем, если захочу хвалиться, не буду неразумен, потому что скажу истину; но я удерживаюсь, чтобы кто не подумал о мне более, нежели сколько во мне видит или слышит от меня.

И чтобы я не превозносился чрезвычайностью откровений, дано мне жало в плоть, ангел сатаны, удручать меня, чтобы я не превозносился.

Трижды молил я Господа о том, чтобы удалил его от меня.

Но Господь сказал мне: «довольно для тебя благодати Моей, ибо сила Моя совершается в немощи». И потому я гораздо охотнее буду хвалиться своими немощами, чтобы обитала во мне сила Христова.

[Зач. 195.] Посему я благодушествую в немощах, в обидах, в нуждах, в гонениях, в притеснениях за Христа, ибо, когда я немощен, тогда силен.

Я дошел до неразумия, хвалясь; вы меня к сему принудили. Вам бы надлежало хвалить меня, ибо у меня ни в чем нет недостатка против высших апостолов, хотя я и ничто.

Признаки апостола оказались перед вами всяким терпением, знамениями, чудесами и силами.

Ибо чего у вас недостает перед прочими церквами, разве только того, что сам я не был вам в тягость? Простите мне такую вину.

Вот, в третий раз я готов идти к вам, и не буду отягощать вас, ибо я ищу не вашего, а вас. Не дети должны собирать имение для родителей, но родители для детей.

Я охотно буду издерживать свое и истощать себя за души ваши, несмотря на то, что, чрезвычайно любя вас, я менее любим вами.

Положим, что сам я не обременял вас, но, будучи хитр, лукавством брал с вас.

Но пользовался ли я чем от вас через кого-нибудь из тех, кого посылал к вам?

Я упросил Тита и послал с ним одного из братьев: Тит воспользовался ли чем от вас? Не в одном ли духе мы действовали? Не одним ли путем ходили?

Не думаете ли еще, что мы только оправдываемся перед вами? Мы говорим пред Богом, во Христе, и все это, возлюбленные, к вашему назиданию.

Je me glorifierai d'un tel homme, mais de moi-même je ne me glorifierai pas, sinon de mes infirmités.

Si je voulais me glorifier, je ne serais pas un insensé, car je dirais la vérité; mais je m'en abstiens, afin que personne n'ait à mon sujet une opinion supérieure à ce qu'il voit en moi ou à ce qu'il entend de moi.

Et pour que je ne sois pas enflé d'orgueil, à cause de l'excellence de ces révélations, il m'a été mis une écharde dans la chair, un ange de Satan pour me souffleter et m'empêcher de m'enorgueillir.

Trois fois j'ai prié le Seigneur de l'éloigner de moi,

et il m'a dit: Ma grâce te suffit, car ma puissance s'accomplit dans la faiblesse. Je me glorifierai donc bien plus volontiers de mes faiblesses, afin que la puissance de Christ repose sur moi.

C'est pourquoi je me plais dans les faiblesses, dans les outrages, dans les calamités, dans les persécutions, dans les détresses, pour Christ; car, quand je suis faible, c'est alors que je suis fort.

J'ai été un insensé: vous m'y avez contraint. C'est par vous que je devais être recommandé, car je n'ai été inférieur en rien aux apôtres par excellence, quoique je ne sois rien.

Les preuves de mon apostolat ont éclaté au milieu de vous par une patience à toute épreuve, par des signes, des prodiges et des miracles.

En quoi avez-vous été traités moins favorablement que les autres Églises, sinon en ce que je ne vous ai point été à charge? Pardonnez-moi ce tort.

Voici, pour la troisième fois je suis prêt à aller chez vous, et je ne vous serai point à charge; car ce ne sont pas vos biens que je cherche, c'est vous-mêmes. Ce n'est pas, en effet, aux enfants à amasser pour leurs parents, mais aux parents pour leurs enfants.

Car je crains de ne pas vous trouver, à mon arrivée, tels que je voudrais, et d'être moi-même trouvé par vous tel que vous ne voudriez pas. Je crains de trouver des querelles, de la jalousie, des animosités, des cabales, des médisances, des calomnies, de l'orgueil, des troubles.

Je crains qu'à mon arrivée mon Dieu ne m'humilie de nouveau à votre sujet, et que je n'aie à pleurer sur plusieurs de ceux qui ont péché précédemment et qui ne se sont pas repentis de l'impureté, de l'impudicité et des dissolutions auxquelles ils se sont livrés.

It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord:

I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago--whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows--such a one was caught up to the third heaven.

And I know such a man--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows--

how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

Of such a one I will boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities.

For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me.

And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.

Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

And He said to me, «My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.» Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ́s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I have become a fool in boasting; you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you; for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing.

Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds.

For what is it in which you were inferior to other churches, except that I myself was not burdensome to you? Forgive me this wrong!

Now for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be burdensome to you; for I do not seek yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.

But be that as it may, I did not burden you. Nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you by cunning!

Did I take advantage of you by any of those whom I sent to you?

I urged Titus, and sent our brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not walk in the same spirit? Did we not walk in the same steps?

Again, do you think that we excuse ourselves to you? We speak before God in Christ. But we do all things, beloved, for your edification.

For I fear lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found by you such as you do not wish; lest there be contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, backbitings, whisperings, conceits, tumults;

lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness which they have practiced.
