And when it was decided that we should sail to Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to one named Julius, a centurion of the Augustan Regiment.
So, entering a ship of Adramyttium, we put to sea, meaning to sail along the coasts of Asia. Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, was with us.
And the next day we landed at Sidon. And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him liberty to go to his friends and receive care.
When we had put to sea from there, we sailed under the shelter of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
And when we had sailed over the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.
There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing to Italy, and he put us on board.
When we had sailed slowly many days, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, the wind not permitting us to proceed, we sailed under the shelter of Crete off Salmone.
Passing it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea.
Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over, Paul advised them,
saying, «Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.»
Nevertheless the centurion was more persuaded by the helmsman and the owner of the ship than by the things spoken by Paul.
And because the harbor was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised to set sail from there also, if by any means they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete opening toward the southwest and northwest, and winter there.
When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete.
But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon.
So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive.
And running under the shelter of an island called Clauda, we secured the skiff with difficulty.
When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands, they struck sail and so were driven.
And because we were exceedingly tempest-tossed, the next day they lightened the ship.
On the third day we threw the shiṕs tackle overboard with our own hands.
Now when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest beat on us, all hope that we would be saved was finally given up.
But after long abstinence from food, then Paul stood in the midst of them and said, «Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.
And now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.
For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,
saying, «Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.́
Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me.
However, we must run aground on a certain island.»
Now when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven up and down in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors sensed that they were drawing near some land.
And they took soundings and found it to be twenty fathoms; and when they had gone a little farther, they took soundings again and found it to be fifteen fathoms.
Then, fearing lest we should run aground on the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern, and prayed for day to come.
And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, when they had let down the skiff into the sea, under pretense of putting out anchors from the prow,
Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, «Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.»
Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the skiff and let it fall off.
And as day was about to dawn, Paul implored them all to take food, saying, «Today is the fourteenth day you have waited and continued without food, and eaten nothing.
Therefore I urge you to take nourishment, for this is for your survival, since not a hair will fall from the head of any of you.»
And when he had said these things, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all; and when he had broken it he began to eat.
Then they were all encouraged, and also took food themselves.
And in all we were two hundred and seventy-six persons on the ship.
So when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship and threw out the wheat into the sea.
When it was day, they did not recognize the land; but they observed a bay with a beach, onto which they planned to run the ship if possible.
And they let go the anchors and left them in the sea, meanwhile loosing the rudder ropes; and they hoisted the mainsail to the wind and made for shore.
But striking a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the prow stuck fast and remained immovable, but the stern was being broken up by the violence of the waves.
And the soldierś plan was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim away and escape.
But the centurion, wanting to save Paul, kept them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should jump overboard first and get to land,
and the rest, some on boards and some on parts of the ship. And so it was that they all escaped safely to land.

Не по мно́зѣ же возвѣ́я проти́венъ ему́ вѣ́тръ бу́ренъ, нарица́емый еврокли́донъ.
Восхище́ну же бы́вшу кораблю́ и не могу́щу сопроти́витися вѣ́тру, вда́вшеся волна́мъ носи́ми бѣ́хомъ.
О́стровъ же нѣ́кiй мимоте́кше, нарица́ющься Клавді́й, едва́ возмого́хомъ удержа́ти ладiю́:
ю́же востя́гше, вся́кимъ о́бразомъ помога́ху, подтвержда́юще кора́бль: боя́щеся же, да не въ Си́рть {въ ме́лкая мѣ́ста} впаду́тъ, низпусти́вше па́русъ, си́це носи́ми бѣ́ху.
Вельми́ же обурева́емымъ на́мъ, на у́трiе измета́нiе творя́ху,
и въ тре́тiй де́нь свои́ми рука́ми я́дрило кора́бленое изверго́хомъ.
Ни со́лнцу же, ни звѣзда́мъ я́вльшымся на мно́ги дни́, и зимѣ́ не ма́лѣ належа́щей, про́чее отима́шеся наде́жда вся́, е́же спасти́ся на́мъ.
Мно́гу же неяде́нiю су́щу, тогда́ ста́въ Па́велъ посредѣ́ и́хъ, рече́: подоба́ше у́бо, о, му́жiе, послу́шавше мене́, не отвезти́ся от Кри́та и избы́ти досажде́нiя сего́ и тщеты́:
и се́, ны́нѣ молю́ вы́ благоду́шствовати, поги́бель бо ни еди́нѣй души́ от ва́съ бу́детъ, ра́звѣ корабля́:
предста́ бо ми́ въ сiю́ но́щь А́нгелъ Бо́га, Его́же а́зъ е́смь, Ему́же и служу́,
глаго́ля: не бо́йся, Па́вле, ке́сарю ти́ подоба́етъ предста́ти, и се́, дарова́ тебѣ́ Бо́гъ вся́ пла́вающыя съ тобо́ю.
Тѣ́мже дерза́йте, му́жiе, вѣ́рую бо Богови, я́ко та́ко бу́детъ, и́мже о́бразомъ рѣче́но ми́ бы́сть:
во о́стровъ же нѣ́кiй подоба́етъ на́мъ приста́ти.
И егда́ четвертаяна́десять но́щь бы́сть, носи́мымъ на́мъ во Адрiа́тстѣй [пучи́нѣ], въ полу́нощи непщева́ху кора́бленицы, я́ко приближа́ются къ нѣ́коей странѣ́,
и измѣ́ривше глубину́ обрѣто́ша саже́ней два́десять: ма́ло же преше́дше и па́ки измѣ́ривше, обрѣто́ша саже́ней пятьна́десять.
Боя́щеся же, да не ка́ко въ пру́дная мѣ́ста впаду́тъ, от но́са корабля́ ве́ргше ко́твы четы́ри, моля́хомся, да де́нь бу́детъ.
Кора́бленикомъ же и́щущымъ бѣжа́ти изъ корабля́ и низвѣ́сившымъ ладiю́ въ мо́ре, извѣ́томъ а́ки от но́са хотя́щымъ ко́твы просте́рти,
рече́ Па́велъ со́тнику и во́иномъ: а́ще не сі́и пребу́дутъ въ корабли́, вы́ спасти́ся не мо́жете.
Тогда́ во́ини отрѣ́заша у́жя ладiи́ и оста́виша ю́ отпа́сти.
Егда́ же хотя́ше де́нь бы́ти, моля́ше Па́велъ всѣ́хъ, да прiи́мутъ пи́щу, глаго́ля: четыренадеся́тый дне́сь де́нь жду́ще, не я́дше пребыва́ете, ничто́же вкуси́вше:
тѣ́мже молю́ ва́съ прiя́ти пи́щу, се́ бо къ ва́шему спасе́нiю е́сть: ни еди́ному бо от ва́съ вла́съ главы́ отпаде́тъ.
Ре́къ же сiя́ и прiе́мь хлѣ́бъ, благодари́ Бо́га предъ всѣ́ми и прело́мль нача́тъ я́сти.
Благонаде́жни же бы́вше вси́, и ті́и прiя́ша пи́щу:
бѣ́ же въ корабли́ всѣ́хъ ду́шъ двѣ́стѣ се́дмьдесятъ и ше́сть.
Насы́щшеся же бра́шна, облегчи́ша кора́бль, измета́юще пшени́цу въ мо́ре.
Егда́ же де́нь бы́сть, земли́ не познава́ху: нѣ́дро же нѣ́кое усмотрѣ́ша иму́щее песо́къ {бре́гъ}, въ не́же, а́ще мо́щно е́сть, совѣща́ша извлещи́ кора́бль.
И ко́твы собра́вше, везя́хуся по мо́рю: ку́пно осла́бивше у́жя корми́ломъ и воздви́гше ма́лое вѣ́трило къ ды́шущему вѣ́трецу, везо́хомся на кра́й {бре́гъ}.
Впа́дше же въ мѣ́сто исо́пное, увязи́ша кора́бль: и но́съ у́бо увя́зшiй пребы́сть недви́жимь, корми́ло же разбива́шеся от ну́жды во́лнъ.
Во́иномъ же совѣ́тъ бы́сть, да у́зники убiю́тъ, да не кто́ поплы́въ избѣ́гнетъ.
Со́тникъ же, хотя́ соблюсти́ Па́вла, возбрани́ совѣ́ту и́хъ, повелѣ́ же могу́щымъ пла́вати, да изскочи́вше пе́рвѣе изы́дутъ на кра́й,
а про́чiи, о́ви у́бо на дщи́цахъ, о́ви же на нѣ́чемъ от корабля́. И та́ко бы́сть всѣ́мъ спасти́ся на зе́млю.
Lorsqu'il fut décidé que nous nous embarquerions pour l'Italie, on remit Paul et quelques autres prisonniers à un centenier de la cohorte Auguste, nommé Julius.
Nous montâmes sur un navire d'Adramytte, qui devait côtoyer l'Asie, et nous partîmes, ayant avec nous Aristarque, Macédonien de Thessalonique.
Le jour suivant, nous abordâmes à Sidon; et Julius, qui traitait Paul avec bienveillance, lui permit d'aller chez ses amis et de recevoir leurs soins.

Un temps assez long s'était écoulé, et la navigation devenait dangereuse, car l'époque même du jeûne était déjà passée.
C'est pourquoi Paul avertit les autres, en disant: O hommes, je vois que la navigation ne se fera pas sans péril et sans beaucoup de dommage, non seulement pour la cargaison et pour le navire, mais encore pour nos personnes.
Le centenier écouta le pilote et le patron du navire plutôt que les paroles de Paul.
Et comme le port n'était pas bon pour hiverner, la plupart furent d'avis de le quitter pour tâcher d'atteindre Phénix, port de Crète qui regarde le sud-ouest et le nord-ouest, afin d'y passer l'hiver.
Un léger vent du sud vint à souffler, et, se croyant maîtres de leur dessein, ils levèrent l'ancre et côtoyèrent de près l'île de Crète.
Mais bientôt un vent impétueux, qu'on appelle Euraquilon, se déchaîna sur l'île.
Le navire fut entraîné, sans pouvoir lutter contre le vent, et nous nous laissâmes aller à la dérive.
Nous passâmes au-dessous d'une petite île nommée Clauda, et nous eûmes de la peine à nous rendre maîtres de la chaloupe;
après l'avoir hissée, on se servit des moyens de secours pour ceindre le navire, et, dans la crainte de tomber sur la Syrte, on abaissa les voiles. C'est ainsi qu'on se laissa emporter par le vent.
Comme nous étions violemment battus par la tempête, le lendemain on jeta la cargaison à la mer,
et le troisième jour nous y lançâmes de nos propres mains les agrès du navire.
Le soleil et les étoiles ne parurent pas pendant plusieurs jours, et la tempête était si forte que nous perdîmes enfin toute espérance de nous sauver.
On n'avait pas mangé depuis longtemps. Alors Paul, se tenant au milieu d'eux, leur dit: O hommes, il fallait m'écouter et ne pas partir de Crète, afin d'éviter ce péril et ce dommage.
Maintenant je vous exhorte à prendre courage; car aucun de vous ne périra, et il n'y aura de perte que celle du navire.
Un ange du Dieu à qui j'appartiens et que je sers m'est apparu cette nuit,
et m'a dit: Paul, ne crains point; il faut que tu comparaisses devant César, et voici, Dieu t'a donné tous ceux qui naviguent avec toi.
C'est pourquoi, ô hommes, rassurez-vous, car j'ai cette confiance en Dieu qu'il en sera comme il m'a été dit.
Mais nous devons échouer sur une île.
La quatorzième nuit, tandis que nous étions ballottés sur l'Adriatique, les matelots, vers le milieu de la nuit, soupçonnèrent qu'on approchait de quelque terre.
Ayant jeté la sonde, ils trouvèrent vingt brasses; un peu plus loin, ils la jetèrent de nouveau, et trouvèrent quinze brasses.
Dans la crainte de heurter contre des écueils, ils jetèrent quatre ancres de la poupe, et attendirent le jour avec impatience.
Mais, comme les matelots cherchaient à s'échapper du navire, et mettaient la chaloupe à la mer sous prétexte de jeter les ancres de la proue,
Paul dit au centenier et aux soldats: Si ces hommes ne restent pas dans le navire, vous ne pouvez être sauvés.
Alors les soldats coupèrent les cordes de la chaloupe, et la laissèrent tomber.
Avant que le jour parût, Paul exhorta tout le monde à prendre de la nourriture, disant: C'est aujourd'hui le quatorzième jour que vous êtes dans l'attente et que vous persistez à vous abstenir de manger.
Je vous invite donc à prendre de la nourriture, car cela est nécessaire pour votre salut, et il ne se perdra pas un cheveux de la tête d'aucun de vous.
Ayant ainsi parlé, il prit du pain, et, après avoir rendu grâces à Dieu devant tous, il le rompit, et se mit à manger.
Et tous, reprenant courage, mangèrent aussi.
Nous étions, dans le navire, deux cent soixante-seize personnes en tout.
Quand ils eurent mangé suffisamment, ils allégèrent le navire en jetant le blé à la mer.
Lorsque le jour fut venu, ils ne reconnurent point la terre; mais, ayant aperçu un golfe avec une plage, ils résolurent d'y pousser le navire, s'ils le pouvaient.
Ils délièrent les ancres pour les laisser aller dans la mer, et ils relâchèrent en même temps les attaches des gouvernails; puis ils mirent au vent la voile d'artimon, et se dirigèrent vers le rivage.
Mais ils rencontrèrent une langue de terre, où ils firent échouer le navire; et la proue, s'étant engagée, resta immobile, tandis que la poupe se brisait par la violence des vagues.
Les soldats furent d'avis de tuer les prisonniers, de peur que quelqu'un d'eux ne s'échappât à la nage.
Mais le centenier, qui voulait sauver Paul, les empêcha d'exécuter ce dessein. Il ordonna à ceux qui savaient nager de se jeter les premiers dans l'eau pour gagner la terre,
et aux autres de se mettre sur des planches ou sur des débris du navire. Et ainsi tous parvinrent à terre sains et saufs.

Тўфон кучаяверганидан, эртаси куни кемадан юкни ота бошлашди.
Учинчи куни эса ўз қўлимиз билан кема жиҳозларини сувга ташлаб юбордик.
Анча кун қуёш ҳам, юлдузлар ҳам кўринмай қолди. Тўфон шиддатли тус олган сари, қутулиб қолишимизга бўлган ҳар қандай умидни йўқотган эдик.
Кемадагилар кўпдан бери овқат емаганлари сабабли, Павлус уларнинг ўртасида туриб: “Эрлар! – деди. – Менга қулоқ солиб Критдан кетмаганингизда эди, бу зарару заҳматларга дучор бўлмасдинглар.
Энди эса сизлардан ўтиниб сўрайман: дадил бўлинглар. Чунки сизлардан ҳеч бир жон ҳалок бўлмайди, фақат кема нобуд бўлади.
Мана, мен Унга мансуб бўлган ва Унга хизмат қилиб юрган Худонинг фариштаси бу кеча менга зоҳир бўлди.
У: “Қўрқма, Павлус! – деди. – Сен Қайсарнинг олдида туришинг керак. Кема йўловчиларига келганда, уларнинг ҳаммасини Худо сенга бағишлади”, – деди.
Шунинг учун, эрлар, дадил бўлинглар! Чунки Худо худди менга айтганидек қилишига қаттиқ ишонаман.
Ҳар ҳолда биронта оролга тушишимиз керак”.
Адрия денгизида шамолга таслим бўлиб юришимизнинг ўн тўртинчи кечасида, қарийб туннинг ярмида денгизчилар қандайдир бир қуруқликка яқинлашганларини пайқадилар.
Чуқурликни ўлчаб, йигирма қулоч эканини билдилар. Кейин бироз масофада яна ўлчаб, ўн беш қулоч эканини аниқладилар.
Тошлоқ жойга урилиб қолишдан қўрқиб, кеманинг орқа тарафидан тўртта лангар ташладилар. Тонг отишини интизор бўлиб кутардилар.
Шу орада денгизчилар кемадан қочмоқ ниятида, гўё кеманинг тумшуғидан лангар ташламоқчи бўлиб, қайиқчани денгизга тушира бошладилар.
Павлус эса юзбоши ва аскарларга қараб:- Агар улар кемада қолмасалар, сизлар қутулолмайсизлар, – деди.
Шунда аскарлар қайиқчанинг арқонларини кесиб, қайиқчани сувга тушириб юбордилар.
Тонг отай деганда, Павлус ҳаммани овқат ейишга ундаб:- Бугун ўн тўртинчи кундирки, ҳеч нарса емай озиқ-овқатсиз қолиб турибсизлар, – деди.
- Шунинг учун овқат ейишингизни ёлвориб сўрайман; бу қутулишингиз учун керакдир. Сизлардан ҳеч кимнинг бошидаги бирор соч толаси ҳам нобуд бўлмайди.
Павлус бу сўзларни айтгандан кейин нонни олди, ҳамманинг олдида Худога шукрона айтиб, нонни синдириб ея бошлади.
Шу тариқа ҳамма дадилланиб, овқат еди.
Кемада жами бўлиб икки юз етмиш олти жон бор эдик.
Овқатга тўйганимиздан кейин буғдойни денгизга отиб, кемани енгиллаштирдилар.
Кундуз бўлгач, кўрган қуруқликларини танимадилар; қирғоғи қумлоқ бўлган бир қўлтиқни пайқадилар. Иложи бўлса, кема билан у жойга бориб тўхташга қарор қилдилар.
Лангарларни узиб ташлаб, денгизда қолдирдилар. Айни замонда рулларнинг ипларини ечиб, олдинги елканни шамолга томон қаратиб, қирғоқ сари кетдилар.
Кема қирғоқнинг саёз ерига дуч келиб, қумга тиқилиб қолди. Кеманинг тумшуғи ботганча қимирламай қолди, қуйруғи эса тўлқинларнинг кучи билан парчалана бошлади.
Ўшанда аскарлар, маҳбуслардан бирон киши сузиб қочиб кетмасин, деб уларни ўлдиришни ният қилдилар.
Лекин юзбоши Павлусни қутқазмоқчи бўлиб, бу ниятларини бажаришдан уларни тўхтатди. Сузишни билганлар биринчи бўлиб ўзларини кемадан ташлаганча қуруқликка чиқсинлар,
қолганлари эса хоҳ тахталарга, хоҳ кеманинг бирон синиқ бўлагига тутиниб, уларнинг кетидан борсинлар, дея амр берди. Шу йўсинда ҳамма соғ-саломат қуруқликка чиқиб олди.
