And command the people, saying, «You are about to pass through the territory of your brethren, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. Therefore watch yourselves carefully.

Do not meddle with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as one footstep, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

You shall buy food from them with money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water from them with money, that you may drink.

«For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He knows your trudging through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.»́

«And when we passed beyond our brethren, the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir, away from the road of the plain, away from Elath and Ezion Geber, we turned and passed by way of the Wilderness of Moab.

Then the LORD said to me, «Do not harass Moab, nor contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.»́

(The Emim had dwelt there in times past, a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim.

They were also regarded as giants, like the Anakim, but the Moabites call them Emim.

The Horites formerly dwelt in Seir, but the descendants of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their place, just as Israel did to the land of their possession which the LORD gave them.)

«»Now rise and cross over the Valley of the Zered.́ So we crossed over the Valley of the Zered.

And the time we took to come from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed over the Valley of the Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of war was consumed from the midst of the camp, just as the LORD had sworn to them.

For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they were consumed.

«So it was, when all the men of war had finally perished from among the people,

that the LORD spoke to me, saying:

«This day you are to cross over at Ar, the boundary of Moab.

And when you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the descendants of Lot as a possession.»́

(That was also regarded as a land of giants; giants formerly dwelt there. But the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,

a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place,

just as He had done for the descendants of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them. They dispossessed them and dwelt in their place, even to this day.

And the Avim, who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza--the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and dwelt in their place.)

«»Rise, take your journey, and cross over the River Arnon. Look, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to possess it, and engage him in battle.

This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the nations under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.́

«And I sent messengers from the Wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying,

«Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the road, and I will turn neither to the right nor to the left.

You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink; only let me pass through on foot,

just as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land which the LORD our God is giving us.́

«But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as it is this day.

«And the LORD said to me, «See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to possess it, that you may inherit his land.́

Then Sihon and all his people came out against us to fight at Jahaz.

And the LORD our God delivered him over to us; so we defeated him, his sons, and all his people.

We took all his cities at that time, and we utterly destroyed the men, women, and little ones of every city; we left none remaining.

We took only the livestock as plunder for ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we took.

From Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and from the city that is in the ravine, as far as Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us; the LORD our God delivered all to us.

Only you did not go near the land of the people of Ammon--anywhere along the River Jabbok, or to the cities of the mountains, or wherever the LORD our God had forbidden us.

Wir kehrten nun um und zogen in die Wüste hinein, in Richtung Schilfmeer, wie der HERR es mir befohlen hatte. Lange Zeit wanderten wir im Wüstengebiet rings um das Bergland Seïr umher.

Schließlich sagte der HERR zu mir:

»Ihr seid nun genug hier umhergezogen. Wendet euch jetzt nach Norden!«

Und er gab mir für euch die Anweisung: »Wenn ihr jetzt durch Edom, das Gebiet eurer Stammesverwandten, der Nachkommen Esaus, zieht, dann fangt auf keinen Fall Krieg mit ihnen an! Sie werden zwar vor euch Angst haben; aber ich werde euch von ihrem Land nicht einen Fußbreit geben. Das Bergland Seïr habe ich den Nachkommen Esaus als bleibenden Besitz zugesprochen.

Wenn ihr beim Durchzug Brot und Wasser braucht, sollt ihr es ihnen bezahlen.«

Das konntet ihr ja auch, denn der HERR, euer Gott, hatte all euer Tun reich gesegnet. Er vergaß euch nicht in der großen Wüste. Vierzig Jahre lang hat er euch begleitet und für euch gesorgt; nie hat es euch an etwas gefehlt.

So zogen wir nordwärts, aber nicht durch das Land unserer Verwandten, der Nachkommen Esaus, und auch nicht auf der Straße, die von Ezjon-Geber und Elat durch die Senke zum Toten Meer führt.

Danach zogen wir weiter in Richtung Moab.

Der HERR aber sagte zu mir: »Kämpft nicht gegen die Moabiter, greift sie nicht an; denn auch von ihrem Land werde ich euch nichts geben. Sie sind die Nachkommen Lots und ich habe ihnen das Gebiet von Ar als bleibenden Besitz zugesprochen.«

– Früher wohnten dort die Emiter, ein großes und mächtiges Volk, dessen Männer ebenso riesenhaft waren wie die Anakiter.

Wie die Anakiter werden sie zu den Rafaïtern gezählt; aber die Moabiter nennen sie Emiter.

Im Bergland Seïr wohnten früher die Horiter, aber die Nachkommen Esaus rotteten sie aus und nahmen ihr Land in Besitz, wie es die Israeliten mit dem Land machten, das der HERR ihnen gegeben hatte. –

»Überschreitet jetzt den Bach Sered«, befahl der HERR und wir taten es.

Seit unserem Aufbruch aus Kadesch-Barnea waren damals 38 Jahre vergangen. In dieser Zeit waren alle wehrfähigen Männer jener Generation gestorben, wie der HERR es als Strafe über sie verhängt hatte.

Der HERR hatte dafür gesorgt, dass keiner von ihnen am Leben blieb.

Nachdem sie nun alle tot waren,

sagte der HERR zu mir:

»Ihr werdet jetzt durch das Gebiet der Moabiter ziehen

und dann an die Grenze der Ammoniter kommen. Kämpft nicht gegen die Ammoniter und greift sie nicht an; denn auch von ihrem Land werde ich euch nichts geben. Sie sind die Nachkommen Lots und ich habe ihnen ihr Land als bleibenden Besitz zugesprochen.«

– Auch dieses Gebiet gilt als Land der Rafaïter, weil dort früher die Rafaïter wohnten. Von den Ammonitern wurden sie Samsummiter genannt;

auch sie waren ein großes und mächtiges Volk, dessen Männer so riesenhaft waren wie die Anakiter. Aber der HERR gab sie in die Gewalt der Ammoniter, die sie ausrotteten und ihr Land in Besitz nahmen,

genauso wie er die Horiter und ihr Land in die Gewalt der Edomiter gab, die dort bis heute wohnen.

Die Awiter aber, die zwischen diesem Gebiet und der Gegend von Gaza in Dörfern gewohnt hatten, mussten den Philistern, die aus Kreta kamen, weichen. –

»Brecht jetzt auf«, sagte der HERR weiter, »und überschreitet den Arnonfluss! Ich habe den Amoriterkönig Sihon, der in Heschbon regiert, in eure Hand gegeben. Eröffnet den Kampf gegen ihn und nehmt sein Land in Besitz!

Von heute an werde ich allen Völkern der Erde Furcht und Schrecken vor euch einjagen. Sie werden zittern vor euch und sich winden vor Angst, wenn sie hören, was man sich von euch erzählt.«

Da schickte ich von der Wüste Kedemot aus Boten nach Heschbon zu König Sihon und ließ ihm sagen: »Wir kommen in friedlicher Absicht!

Erlaube uns, durch dein Land zu ziehen. Wir wollen nur die Straße benutzen und werden weder nach rechts noch nach links davon abgehen.

Was wir an Brot und Wasser brauchen, werden wir bezahlen. Wir wollen nichts weiter als durchziehen,

wie uns das schon die Edomiter und Moabiter erlaubt haben. Unser Ziel ist das Land auf der anderen Seite des Jordans, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns geben will.«

Aber König Sihon wollte uns nicht durchziehen lassen. Der HERR, euer Gott, hatte ihn starrsinnig und uneinsichtig gemacht; denn er wollte ihn in eure Hand geben, wie es tatsächlich geschehen ist.

Er sagte zu mir: »Ich habe schon für euch gehandelt: Sihon und sein Land sind euch wehrlos preisgegeben. Nun handelt auch ihr: Nehmt sein Land in Besitz!«

Als uns nun Sihon mit seiner ganzen Kriegsmacht nach Jahaz entgegenzog,

gab der HERR ihn in unsere Hand, und wir töteten ihn, seine Söhne und alle seine Kriegsleute.

Dann nahmen wir alle seine Städte ein und vollstreckten den Bann an ihren Bewohnern, den Männern, Frauen und Kindern. Niemand ließen wir lebend entkommen.

Nur das Vieh verschonten wir und nahmen es als Beute, und dazu alles, was sonst noch von Wert war.

Von Aroër auf den Höhen über dem Arnontal und der Stadt, die direkt am Arnonfluss liegt, bis hin zur Landschaft Gilead konnte sich keine einzige Stadt gegen uns behaupten; alle gab der HERR, unser Gott, in unsere Hand.

Nur vom Land der Ammoniter habt ihr euch fern gehalten und habt das Gebiet zu beiden Seiten des Jabboks und die Städte im angrenzenden Bergland nicht besetzt, weil der HERR, unser Gott, es uns verwehrt hatte.

И обратились мы и отправились в пустыню к Чермному морю, как говорил мне Господь, и много времени ходили вокруг горы Сеира.

И сказал мне Господь, говоря:

полно вам ходить вокруг этой горы, обратитесь к северу;

и народу дай повеление и скажи: вы будете проходить пределы братьев ваших, сынов Исавовых, живущих на Сеире, и они убоятся вас; но остерегайтесь

начинать с ними войну, ибо Я не дам вам земли их ни на стопу ноги, потому что гору Сеир Я дал во владение Исаву;

пищу покупайте у них за серебро и ешьте; и воду покупайте у них за серебро и пейте;

ибо Господь, Бог твой, благословил тебя во всяком деле рук твоих, покровительствовал тебе во время путешествия твоего по великой [и страшной] пустыне сей; вот, сорок лет Господь, Бог твой, с тобою; ты ни в чем не терпел недостатка.

И шли мы мимо братьев наших, сынов Исавовых, живущих на Сеире, путем равнины, от Елафа и Ецион-Гавера, и поворотили, и шли к пустыне Моава.

И сказал мне Господь: не вступай во вражду с Моавом и не начинай с ними войны; ибо Я не дам тебе ничего от земли его во владение, потому что Ар отдал Я во владение сынам Лотовым;

да и рука Господня была на них, чтоб истреблять их из среды стана, пока не вымерли.

Когда же перевелись все ходящие на войну и вымерли из среды народа,

тогда сказал мне Господь, говоря:

ты проходишь ныне мимо пределов Моава, мимо Ара,

и приблизился к Аммонитянам; не вступай с ними во вражду, и не начинай с ними войны, ибо Я не дам тебе ничего от земли сынов Аммоновых во владение, потому что Я отдал ее во владение сынам Лотовым;

и она считалась землею Рефаимов; прежде жили на ней Рефаимы; Аммонитяне же называют их Замзумимами;

народ великий, многочисленный и высокий, как сыны Енаковы, и истребил их Господь пред лицем их, и изгнали они их и поселились на месте их,

как Он сделал для сынов Исавовых, живущих на Сеире, истребив пред лицем их Хорреев, и они изгнали их, и поселились на месте их, и живут до сего дня;

и Аввеев, живших в селениях до самой Газы, Кафторимы, исшедшие из Кафтора, истребили и поселились на месте их.

Встаньте, отправьтесь и перейдите поток Арнон; вот, Я предаю в руку твою Сигона, царя Есевонского, Аморреянина, и землю его; начинай овладевать ею, и веди с ним войну;

с сего дня Я начну распространять страх и ужас пред тобою на народы под всем небом; те, которые услышат о тебе, вострепещут и ужаснутся тебя.

И послал я послов из пустыни Кедемоф к Сигону, царю Есевонскому, с словами мирными, чтобы сказать:

позволь пройти мне землею твоею; я пойду дорогою, не сойду ни направо, ни налево;

пищу продавай мне за серебро, и я буду есть, и воду для питья давай мне за серебро, и я буду пить, только ногами моими пройду –

И сказал мне Господь: вот, Я начинаю предавать тебе Сигона [царя Есевонского, Аморреянина,] и землю его; начинай овладевать землею его.

И Сигон [царь Есевонский] со всем народом своим выступил против нас на сражение к Яаце;

и предал его Господь, Бог наш, [в руки наши,] и мы поразили его и сынов его и весь народ его,

и взяли в то время все города его, и предали заклятию все города, мужчин и женщин и детей, не оставили никого в живых;

только взяли мы себе в добычу скот их и захваченное во взятых нами городах.

От Ароера, который на берегу потока Арнона, и от города, который на долине, до [горы] Галаада не было города, который был бы неприступен для нас: всё предал Господь, Бог наш, [в руки наши].

Только к земле Аммонитян ты не подходил, ни к местам [лежащим] близ потока Иавока, ни к городам [которые] на горе, ни ко всему, к чему не повелел [нам] Господь, Бог наш.
