Моисей побуждает к смирению и напоминает об идолопоклонстве у Хорива и их упорстве в грехе.

Слушай, Израиль: ты теперь идешь за Иордан, чтобы пойти овладеть народами, которые больше и сильнее тебя, городами большими, с укреплениями до небес,

народом [великим,] многочисленным и великорослым, сынами Енаковыми, о которых ты знаешь и слышал: «кто устоит против сынов Енаковых?»

Знай же ныне, что Господь, Бог твой, идет пред тобою, как огнь поядающий; Он будет истреблять их и низлагать их пред тобою, и ты изгонишь их, и погубишь их скоро, как говорил тебе Господь.

Когда будет изгонять их Господь, Бог твой, от лица твоего, не говори в сердце твоем, что за праведность мою привел меня Господь овладеть сею [доброю] землею, и что за нечестие народов сих Господь изгоняет их от лица твоего;

не за праведность твою и не за правоту сердца твоего идешь ты наследовать землю их, но за нечестие [и беззакония] народов сих Господь, Бог твой, изгоняет их от лица твоего, и дабы исполнить слово, которым клялся Господь отцам твоим Аврааму, Исааку и Иакову;

Помни, не забудь, сколько ты раздражал Господа, Бога твоего, в пустыне: с самого того дня, как вышел ты из земли Египетской, и до самого прихода вашего на место сие вы противились Господу.

И при Хориве вы раздражали Господа, и прогневался на вас Господь, так что хотел истребить вас,

когда я взошел на гору, чтобы принять скрижали каменные, скрижали завета, который поставил Господь с вами, и пробыл на горе сорок дней и сорок ночей, хлеба не ел и воды не пил,

не удерживай Меня, и Я истреблю их, и изглажу имя их из поднебесной, а от тебя произведу народ, который будет [больше,] сильнее и многочисленнее их.

Я обратился и пошел с горы, гора же горела огнем; две скрижали завета были в обеих руках моих;

Вы были непокорны Господу с того самого дня, как я стал знать вас.

Höre, Volk Israel! Du wirst jetzt den Jordan überschreiten. Du wirst Völker vertreiben, die größer und stärker sind als du, und Städte in Besitz nehmen, die durch himmelhohe Mauern geschützt sind.

Es gibt dort das Volk der Anakiter, ein großes Volk mit riesenhaften Männern. Ihr habt von ihnen gehört und kennt das geflügelte Wort: »Mit den Anakitern nimmt es keiner auf.«

Aber ihr werdet erleben, dass der HERR, euer Gott, vor euch herzieht wie ein verzehrendes Feuer; er wird sie vor euch in die Knie zwingen, sodass ihr sie in kürzester Zeit vertreiben und vernichten könnt, wie er es euch versprochen hat.

Wenn das geschehen ist und der HERR sie vor dir vertrieben hat, dann lass dir nicht einfallen zu sagen: »Das ist der Lohn für meinen Gehorsam! Weil ich immer das Rechte getan habe, hat der HERR mich in dieses Land gebracht.«

Nein, der HERR gibt dir dieses Land nicht deshalb, weil du ihm gehorcht hast und ihm immer treu gefolgt bist. Vielmehr vertreibt er diese Völker vor dir, weil sie sich schuldig gemacht haben und um die Zusage einzulösen, die er deinen Vorfahren Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid gemacht hat.

Macht euch nichts vor! Der HERR, euer Gott, gibt euch dieses schöne Land nicht wegen irgendwelcher Verdienste. Nein, ihr seid ein durch und durch widerspenstiges Volk!

Denkt doch daran, wie oft ihr in der Wüste den Zorn des HERRN, eures Gottes, herausgefordert habt! Von dem Tag an, da ihr aus Ägypten aufgebrochen seid, bis zu eurer Ankunft an diesem Ort habt ihr euch dem HERRN widersetzt.

Am Berg Horeb habt ihr ihn so sehr zum Zorn gereizt, dass er euch vernichten wollte.

Ich war damals auf den Berg gestiegen, denn der HERR wollte mir die beiden Steintafeln übergeben, auf denen die Verpflichtungen des Bundes geschrieben standen, den er mit euch geschlossen hatte. Vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte blieb ich oben auf dem Berg, ohne etwas zu essen und zu trinken.

Dort gab der HERR mir die beiden Tafeln. Er hatte mit eigener Hand die Worte darauf geschrieben, die er aus dem Feuer heraus zu euch gesprochen hatte, während ihr unten am Berg versammelt wart.

Es war am Ende der vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte, dass der HERR mir die Tafeln mit den Bundesverpflichtungen gab.

Dann sagte er zu mir: »Steig rasch den Berg hinab! Dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast, hat etwas Schreckliches getan. Sie sind sehr schnell von dem Weg abgewichen, den ich ihnen doch eben erst durch meine Gebote gewiesen habe. Sie haben sich ein gegossenes Gottesbild gemacht.«

Und er fügte hinzu: »Ich weiß jetzt, was für ein widerspenstiges Volk sie sind.

Versuche nicht, mich umzustimmen. Ich will sie so gründlich vernichten, dass nicht einmal ihr Name in Erinnerung bleibt. Aus deinen Nachkommen aber will ich ein Volk machen, das noch größer und stärker ist als sie.«

Sofort stieg ich den Berg hinunter, der noch immer in Flammen stand. Die beiden Steintafeln trug ich in den Händen.

Da sah ich, dass ihr euch gegen den HERRN, euren Gott, aufgelehnt und euch ein gegossenes Stierbild gemacht hattet. So schnell wart ihr von dem Weg abgewichen, den er euch mit seinen Geboten gewiesen hatte!

Ich schleuderte die beiden Tafeln zu Boden und zerschmetterte sie vor euren Augen.

Dann warf ich mich vor dem HERRN nieder und lag vor ihm noch einmal vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte lang, ohne etwas zu essen und zu trinken. Ich trat für euch ein und flehte ihn an, dass er euch eure Schuld vergibt; denn ihr hattet mit eurem Götzendienst seinen Zorn erregt.

Ich fürchtete, der HERR würde in seinem Zorn euch alle vernichten; doch der HERR hörte auch diesmal auf mein Gebet.

Auch auf Aaron war der HERR zornig und wollte ihn töten; aber ich betete auch für ihn.

Das Stierbild, das ihr in eurer Auflehnung gegen den HERRN gemacht hattet, warf ich ins Feuer, zermalmte es und zerrieb die Überreste zu Pulver. Das streute ich in das Wasser des Baches, der vom Berg herabkommt.

Schon zuvor und auch später immer wieder, bei Tabera, bei Massa und bei Kibrot-Taawa, habt ihr den HERRN zum Zorn gereizt.

Und als der HERR, euer Gott, in Kadesch-Barnea zu euch sagte: »Zieht los und erobert das Land, das ich euch zugesprochen habe«, da widersetztet ihr euch seinem Befehl. Weil ihr dem HERRN nichts zugetraut habt, habt ihr ihm nicht gehorcht.

Seit ich euch kenne, lehnt ihr euch gegen ihn auf.

Ich lag also damals vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte im Gebet vor dem HERRN, weil er gedroht hatte, euch zu vernichten.

Ich betete: »Ach HERR, du mächtiger Gott, vernichte doch nicht dein Volk, dein Eigentum, das du in deiner großen Macht aus dem Sklavendienst befreit und mit starker Hand aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast!

Denk an Abraham, Isaak und Jakob, die dir treu gedient haben, und sieh nicht auf die Schuld dieses widerspenstigen Volkes!

Du kannst doch nicht zulassen, dass sie in dem Land, aus dem du uns herausgeführt hast, sagen: ́Ihr Gott war nicht imstande, sie in das Land zu bringen, das er ihnen zugesagt hatte! Oder er hat sie gehasst und hat sie nur von hier weggeführt, damit sie in der Wüste umkommen.́

Sie sind doch dein Eigentum, dein Volk, das du mit deiner großen Kraft und deinem ausgestreckten Arm in die Freiheit geführt hast!«

Dann stieg Mose vom moabitischen Steppengebiet hinauf auf den Berg Nebo, auf den Gipfel des Pisga, der östlich von Jericho liegt. Dort oben zeigte ihm der HERR das Land, das zu seinen Füßen ausgebreitet war: die Landschaft Gilead und die daran anschließenden Gebiete bis hinauf zum Stammesgebiet von Dan,

das ganze Gebiet des Stammes Naftali, das Gebiet der Stämme Efraïm und Manasse und das ganze Gebiet des Stammes Juda bis zum Meer im Westen,

ebenso das Südland und die Senke von der Palmenstadt bis nach Zoar.

Er sagte zu ihm: »Dies ist das Land, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid versprochen und von dem ich zu ihnen gesagt habe: ́Euren Nachkommen will ich es geben!́ Du hast es jetzt mit eigenen Augen gesehen, aber du selbst darfst es nicht betreten.«

So starb Mose, der Bevollmächtigte Gottes, im Land Moab, wie der HERR es bestimmt hatte.

Gott begrub ihn dort im Tal gegenüber von Bet-Pegor. Bis heute weiß niemand, wo sein Grab ist.

Mose war 120 Jahre alt, als er starb. Aber bis zuletzt war er rüstig geblieben und seine Sehkraft hatte nicht nachgelassen.

Dreißig Tage lang hielt das ganze Volk im moabitischen Steppengebiet für ihn die Totenklage.

Josua, der Sohn Nuns, wurde nun der Anführer der Israeliten. Er war mit Weisheit und Umsicht begabt, seit Mose ihm die Hände aufgelegt und ihn dadurch zu seinem Nachfolger eingesetzt hatte. Die Leute von Israel gehorchten ihm, wie der HERR ihnen das durch Mose befohlen hatte.

Nie mehr gab es in Israel einen Propheten wie Mose, mit dem der HERR Auge in Auge gesprochen hat.

Kein anderer Prophet hat solche Staunen erregenden Wunder vollbracht wie die, mit denen er im Auftrag des HERRN in Ägypten gegen den Pharao, seine Minister und sein ganzes Land aufgetreten ist.

Kein anderer hat Israel mit so starker Hand geführt und vor den Augen des ganzen Volkes solche mächtigen und Schrecken erregenden Taten vollbracht wie er.

«Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, «Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?́

Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you.

«Do not think in your heart, after the LORD your God has cast them out before you, saying, «Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land́; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is driving them out from before you.

It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Therefore understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.

«Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD.

Also in Horeb you provoked the LORD to wrath, so that the LORD was angry enough with you to have destroyed you.

When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water.

Then the LORD delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

And it came to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.

«Then the LORD said to me, «Arise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly; they have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made themselves a molded image.́

«Furthermore the LORD spoke to me, saying, «I have seen this people, and indeed they are a stiff-necked people.

Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.́

«So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.

And I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the LORD your God--had made for yourselves a molded calf! You had turned aside quickly from the way which the LORD had commanded you.

Then I took the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes.

And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sin which you committed in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger.

For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which the LORD was angry with you, to destroy you. But the LORD listened to me at that time also.

And the LORD was very angry with Aaron and would have destroyed him; so I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.

Then I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it and ground it very small, until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.

«Also at Taberah and Massah and Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked the LORD to wrath.

Likewise, when the LORD sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, «Go up and possess the land which I have given you,́ then you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and you did not believe Him nor obey His voice.

You have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.

«Thus I prostrated myself before the LORD; forty days and forty nights I kept prostrating myself, because the LORD had said He would destroy you.

Therefore I prayed to the LORD, and said: «O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people and Your inheritance whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look on the stubbornness of this people, or on their wickedness or their sin,

lest the land from which You brought us should say, «Because the LORD was not able to bring them to the land which He promised them, and because He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.»

Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your mighty power and by Your outstretched arm.́

Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan,

all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea,

the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.

Then the LORD said to him, «This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, «I will give it to your descendants.́ I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.»

So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day.

Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes were not dim nor his natural vigor diminished.

And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. So the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended.

Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

in all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land,

and by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.
