and say, «Thus says the Lord GOD to Jerusalem: «Your birth and your nativity are from the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

As for your nativity, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water to cleanse you; you were not rubbed with salt nor wrapped in swaddling cloths.

No eye pitied you, to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were thrown out into the open field, when you yourself were loathed on the day you were born.

«And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you in your blood, «Live!́ Yes, I said to you in your blood, «Live!́

I made you thrive like a plant in the field; and you grew, matured, and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed, your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.

«When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine,» says the Lord GOD.

«Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil.

I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals of badger skin; I clothed you with fine linen and covered you with silk.

I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain on your neck.

And I put a jewel in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.

Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate pastry of fine flour, honey, and oil. You were exceedingly beautiful, and succeeded to royalty.

Your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through My splendor which I had bestowed on you,» says the Lord GOD.

«But you trusted in your own beauty, played the harlot because of your fame, and poured out your harlotry on everyone passing by who would have it.

You took some of your garments and adorned multicolored high places for yourself, and played the harlot on them. Such things should not happen, nor be.

You have also taken your beautiful jewelry from My gold and My silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images and played the harlot with them.

You took your embroidered garments and covered them, and you set My oil and My incense before them.

Also My food which I gave you--the pastry of fine flour, oil, and honey which I fed you--you set it before them as sweet incense; and so it was,» says the Lord GOD.

«Moreover you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your acts of harlotry a small matter,

that you have slain My children and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the fire?

And in all your abominations and acts of harlotry you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, struggling in your blood.

«Then it was so, after all your wickedness--»Woe, woe to you!́ says the Lord GOD--

that you also built for yourself a shrine, and made a high place for yourself in every street.

You built your high places at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your acts of harlotry.

You also committed harlotry with the Egyptians, your very fleshly neighbors, and increased your acts of harlotry to provoke Me to anger.

«Behold, therefore, I stretched out My hand against you, diminished your allotment, and gave you up to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior.

You also played the harlot with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable; indeed you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied.

Moreover you multiplied your acts of harlotry as far as the land of the trader, Chaldea; and even then you were not satisfied.

«How degenerate is your heart!» says the Lord GOD, «seeing you do all these things, the deeds of a brazen harlot.

«You erected your shrine at the head of every road, and built your high place in every street. Yet you were not like a harlot, because you scorned payment.

You are an adulterous wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband.

Men make payment to all harlots, but you made your payments to all your lovers, and hired them to come to you from all around for your harlotry.

You are the opposite of other women in your harlotry, because no one solicited you to be a harlot. In that you gave payment but no payment was given you, therefore you are the opposite.»

«Now then, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD!

Thus says the Lord GOD: «Because your filthiness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your harlotry with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children which you gave to them,

surely, therefore, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved, and all those you hated; I will gather them from all around against you and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.

And I will judge you as women who break wedlock or shed blood are judged; I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy.

I will also give you into their hand, and they shall throw down your shrines and break down your high places. They shall also strip you of your clothes, take your beautiful jewelry, and leave you naked and bare.

«They shall also bring up an assembly against you, and they shall stone you with stones and thrust you through with their swords.

They shall burn your houses with fire, and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women; and I will make you cease playing the harlot, and you shall no longer hire lovers.

So I will lay to rest My fury toward you, and My jealousy shall depart from you. I will be quiet, and be angry no more.

Because you did not remember the days of your youth, but agitated Me with all these things, surely I will also recompense your deeds on your own head,» says the Lord GOD. «And you shall not commit lewdness in addition to all your abominations.

«Indeed everyone who quotes proverbs will use this proverb against you: «Like mother, like daughter!́

You are your motheŕs daughter, loathing husband and children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children; your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

«Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells with her daughters to the north of you; and your younger sister, who dwells to the south of you, is Sodom and her daughters.

You did not walk in their ways nor act according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, you became more corrupt than they in all your ways.

«As I live,» says the Lord GOD, «neither your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done as you and your daughters have done.

Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit.

«Samaria did not commit half of your sins; but you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and have justified your sisters by all the abominations which you have done.

You who judged your sisters, bear your own shame also, because the sins which you committed were more abominable than theirs; they are more righteous than you. Yes, be disgraced also, and bear your own shame, because you justified your sisters.

«When I bring back their captives, the captives of Sodom and her daughters, and the captives of Samaria and her daughters, then I will also bring back the captives of your captivity among them,

that you may bear your own shame and be disgraced by all that you did when you comforted them.

When your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters return to their former state, then you and your daughters will return to your former state.

For your sister Sodom was not a byword in your mouth in the days of your pride,

before your wickedness was uncovered. It was like the time of the reproach of the daughters of Syria and all those around her, and of the daughters of the Philistines, who despise you everywhere.

Fils de l'homme, fais connaître à Jérusalem ses abominations!

Tu diras: Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel, à Jérusalem: Par ton origine et ta naissance tu es du pays de Canaan; ton père était un Amoréen, et ta mère une Héthienne.

A ta naissance, au jour où tu naquis, ton nombril n'a pas été coupé, tu n'as pas été lavée dans l'eau pour être purifiée, tu n'as pas été frottée avec du sel, tu n'as pas été enveloppée dans des langes.

Nul n'a porté sur toi un regard de pitié pour te faire une seule de ces choses, par compassion pour toi; mais tu as été jetée dans les champs, le jour de ta naissance, parce qu'on avait horreur de toi.

Je passais près de toi, je t'aperçus baignée dans ton sang, et je te dis: Vis dans ton sang! je te dis: Vis dans ton sang!

Je t'ai multipliée par dix milliers, comme les herbes des champs. Et tu pris de l'accroissement, tu grandis, tu devins d'une beauté parfaite; tes seins se formèrent, ta chevelure se développa. Mais tu étais nue, entièrement nue.

Je passai près de toi, je te regardai, et voici, ton temps était là, le temps des amours. J'étendis sur toi le pan de ma robe, je couvris ta nudité, je te jurai fidélité, je fis alliance avec toi, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, et tu fus à moi.

Je te lavai dans l'eau, je fis disparaître le sang qui était sur toi, et je t'oignis avec de l'huile.

Je te donnai des vêtements brodés, et une chaussure de peaux teintes en bleu; je te ceignis de fin lin, et je te couvris de soie.

Je te parai d'ornements: je mis des bracelets à tes mains, un collier à ton cou,

je mis un anneau à ton nez, des pendants à tes oreilles, et une couronne magnifique sur ta tête.

Ainsi tu fus parée d'or et d'argent, et tu fus vêtue de fin lin, de soie et d'étoffes brodées. La fleur de farine, le miel et l'huile, furent ta nourriture. Tu étais d'une beauté accomplie, digne de la royauté.

Tu as pris de tes vêtements, tu t'es fait des hauts lieux que tu as garnis d'étoffes de toutes couleurs, et tu t'y es prostituée: rien de semblable n'était arrivé et n'arrivera jamais.

Tu as pris ta magnifique parure d'or et d'argent, que je t'avais donnée, et tu en as fait des simulacres d'hommes, auxquels tu t'es prostituée.

Tu as pris tes vêtements brodés, tu les en as couverts, et tu as offert à ces simulacres mon huile et mon encens.

Le pain que je t'avais donné, la fleur de farine, l'huile et le miel, dont je te nourrissais, tu leur as offert ces choses comme des parfums d'une odeur agréable. Voilà ce qui est arrivé, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel.

Tu as pris tes fils et tes filles, que tu m'avais enfantés, et tu les leur as sacrifiés pour qu'ils leur servent d'aliment: n'était-ce pas assez de tes prostitutions?

Tu as égorgé mes fils, et tu les as donnés, en les faisant passer par le feu en leur honneur.

Au milieu de toutes tes abominations et de tes prostitutions, tu ne t'es pas souvenue du temps de ta jeunesse, lorsque tu étais nue, entièrement nue, et baignée dans ton sang.

Après toutes tes méchantes actions, -malheur, malheur à toi! dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, -

tu t'es bâti des maisons de prostitution, tu t'es fait des hauts lieux dans toutes les places;

à l'entrée de chaque chemin tu as construit tes hauts lieux, tu as déshonoré ta beauté, tu t'es livrée à tous les passants, tu as multiplié tes prostitutions.

Tu t'es prostituée aux Égyptiens, tes voisins au corps vigoureux, et tu as multiplié tes prostitutions pour m'irriter.

Et voici, j'ai étendu ma main contre toi, j'ai diminué la part que je t'avais assignée, je t'ai livrée à la volonté de tes ennemis, les filles des Philistins, qui ont rougi de ta conduite criminelle.

Tu t'es prostituée aux Assyriens, parce que tu n'étais pas rassasiée; tu t'es prostituée à eux, et tu n'as pas encore été rassasiée.

Tu as multiplié tes prostitutions avec le pays de Canaan et jusqu'en Chaldée, et avec cela tu n'as pas encore été rassasiée.

Quelle faiblesse de coeur tu as eue, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, en faisant toutes ces choses, qui sont l'oeuvre d'une maîtresse prostituée!

Lorsque tu bâtissais tes maisons de prostitution à l'entrée de chaque chemin, lorsque tu faisais tes hauts lieux dans toutes les places, tu n'as pas même été comme la prostituée qui réclame un salaire;

tu as été la femme adultère, qui reçoit des étrangers au lieu de son mari.

A toutes les prostituées on paie un salaire; mais toi, tu as fait des dons à tous tes amants, tu les as gagnés par des présents, afin de les attirer à toi de toutes parts dans tes prostitutions.

Tu as été le contraire des autres prostituées, parce qu'on ne te recherchait pas; et en donnant un salaire au lieu d'en recevoir un, tu as été le contraire des autres.

C'est pourquoi, prostituée, écoute la parole de l'Éternel!

Ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Parce que tes trésors ont été dissipés, et que ta nudité a été découverte dans tes prostitutions avec tes amants et avec toutes tes abominables idoles, et à cause du sang de tes enfants que tu leur as donnés,

voici, je rassemblerai tous tes amants avec lesquels tu te plaisais, tous ceux que tu as aimés et tous ceux que tu as haïs, je les rassemblerai de toutes parts contre toi, je leur découvrirai ta nudité, et ils verront toute ta nudité.

Je te jugerai comme on juge les femmes adultères et celles qui répandent le sang, et je ferai de toi une victime sanglante de la fureur et de la jalousie.

Je te livrerai entre leurs mains; ils abattront tes maisons de prostitution et détruiront tes hauts lieux; ils te dépouilleront de tes vêtements, prendront ta magnifique parure, et te laisseront nue, entièrement nue.

Ils amèneront la foule contre toi, ils te lapideront et te perceront à coups d'épée;

ils brûleront tes maisons par le feu, et ils feront justice de toi, aux yeux d'une multitude de femmes. Je ferai cesser ainsi ton impudicité et tu ne donneras plus de salaire.

J'assouvirai ma colère contre toi, et tu ne seras plus l'objet de ma jalousie; je m'apaiserai, je ne serai plus irrité.

Parce que tu ne t'es pas souvenue du temps de ta jeunesse, parce que tu m'as provoqué par toutes ces choses, voici, je ferai retomber ta conduite sur ta tête, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, et tu ne commettras plus le crime avec toutes tes abominations.

Voici, tous ceux qui disent des proverbes, t'appliqueront ce proverbe: Telle mère, telle fille!

Tu es la fille de ta mère, qui a repoussé son mari et ses enfants; tu es la soeur de tes soeurs, qui ont repoussé leur mari et leurs enfants. Votre mère était une Héthienne, et votre père un Amoréen.

Ta grande soeur, qui demeure à ta gauche, c'est Samarie avec ses filles; et ta petite soeur, qui demeure à ta droite, c'est Sodome avec ses filles.

Voici quel a été le crime de Sodome, ta soeur. Elle avait de l'orgueil, elle vivait dans l'abondance et dans une insouciante sécurité, elle et ses filles, et elle ne soutenait pas la main du malheureux et de l'indigent.

Elles sont devenues hautaines, et elles ont commis des abominations devant moi. Je les ai fait disparaître, quand j'ai vu cela.

Samarie n'a pas commis la moitié de tes péchés; tes abominations ont été plus nombreuses que les siennes, et tu as justifié tes soeurs par toutes les abominations que tu as faites.

Toi qui condamnais tes soeurs, supporte ton opprobre, à cause de tes péchés par lesquels tu t'es rendue plus abominable qu'elles, et qui les font paraître plus justes que toi; sois confuse, et supporte ton opprobre, puisque tu as justifié tes soeurs.

Je ramènerai leurs captifs, les captifs de Sodome et de ses filles, les captifs de Samarie et de ses filles, et tes captifs au milieu des leurs,

afin que tu subisses ton opprobre, et que tu rougisses de tout ce que tu as fait, en étant pour elles un sujet de consolation.

J'établirai mon alliance avec toi, et tu sauras que je suis l'Éternel,

При твоєму народженні, того дня, як ти народилася, не був обрізаний пупок твій, і водою не була ти обмита на очищення, ані не була ти посолена, ані не була ти сповита.

Не змилувалося над тобою жодне око, щоб зробити тобі одну з цих речей з милосердя над тобою, але була ти викинена на відкрите поле, так мало ціновано душу твою в день твойого народження!

І проходив Я повз тебе, і бачив тебе, як ти валялася в своїй крові, і сказав Я до тебе: Живи в своїй крові!
Так, Я сказав тобі: Живи в своїй крові!

Рости ж, зробив Я тебе, як польову ростину, і ти зросла та стала велика, і дійшла ти до найвродливішої вроди: перса випростались, волос твій виріс, а ти була зовсім нага!

І покладалася ти на красу свою, і стала розпусною через славу свою, і виливала ти розпусту свою на кожного перехожого, його ти була.

І брала ти з шат своїх, і робила собі різнокольорові пагірки, і чинила розпусту на них, як не бувало й не буде.

І брала ти речі з пишноти своєї, з Мого золота та зо срібла Мого, що дав тобі Я, і наробила собі подоб чоловічої статі, і чинила розпусту із ними.

І брала ти свою різнокольорову одіж, і покривала їх, а оливу Мою та Моє кадило клала перед ними.

А Мій хліб, що давав Я тобі, булку й оливу та мед, що ними годував Я тебе, то віддавала ти те перед їхнє обличчя на любі пахощі.
І сталося це, говорить Господь Бог.

І брала ти синів своїх та дочок своїх, що породила Мені, і приносила їх на їжу їм.
Чи мало було розпусти твоєї,

що ти різала дітей Моїх і давала їм, перепроваджуючи через огонь для них?

І при всіх гидотах твоїх та розпустах твоїх ти не пам́ятала про дні своєї молодости, коли була нагою-пренагою, коли валялася в крові своїй…

І сталося по всьому тому твоєму злі, горе, горе тобі!

і побудувала ти собі місця розпусти, і поробила собі підвищення на кожному майдані.

На кожному роздоріжжі побудувала ти свої підвищення, і знеславила красу свою, і розхиляла ноги свої для кожного перехожого, і побільшувала свою розпусту…

І чинила ти розпусту з синами Єгипту, з своїми сусідами великотелесими, і побільшувала свою розпусту, щоб гнівити Мене.

І ось простягнув Я Свою руку на тебе, і відняв належну частину твою, і дав тебе на волю твоїх ненависниць, филистимських дочок, засоромлених твоєю нечистою дорогою.

Бо чинила ти розпусту з синами Ашшуровими, і не могла насититись, і блудила з ними, і теж не наситилась.

І побільшила ти свою розпусту до купецького краю халдеїв, та теж цим не наситилася.

Як змучилося серце твоє, говорить Господь Бог, коли ти робила всі оці вчинки свавільної розпусної жінки!

Коли ти будувала місця своєї розпусти на кожному роздоріжжі, а підвищення своє робила на кожному майдані, то не була ти, як блудниця, щоб збирати заплату за розпусту,

але як перелюбна жінка, що замість свого чоловіка бере собі чужих.

Усім блудницям дають дарунка, а ти сама давала дарунки свої всім коханцям своїм, і підкуповувала їх, щоб приходили до тебе звідусіль на розпусту з тобою.

І було тобі при твоїй розпусті навпаки від інших жінок, бо не волочились за тобою, а через те, що ти давала заплату за розпусту, і заплата за розпусту не давалась тобі, то сталось тобі навпаки.

Тому то, розпуснице, послухай Господнього слова:

Так говорить Господь Бог: За те, що виливалась твоя розпуста, і відкривалась твоя нагота в блудодійстві твоїм з твоїми коханцями та зо всіма божками гидоти твоєї, і за кров синів твоїх, яких ти давала їм,

тому ось Я позбираю всіх коханців твоїх, яким була ти приємна, і всіх, кого ти кохала, разом з тими, кого ти зненавиділа, і зберу їх коло тебе знавкола, і відкрию їм наготу твою, і вони побачать увесь твій сором!

І засуджу тебе присудом на перелюбниць та тих, що кров проливають, і дам тебе на кров лютости та заздрости…

І віддам тебе в їхню руку, і вони зруйнують твоє місце розпусти, і порозвалюють підвищення твої, і постягають з тебе шати твої, і позабирають пишні вбрання твої, і покладуть тебе зовсім нагою…

І зберуть проти тебе збори, і закидають тебе камінням, і порубають тебе своїми мечами…

І попалять доми твої огнем, і зроблять на тебе присуди на очах багатьох жінок.
І зроблю Я кінець, щоб не була ти розпусницею, і ти вже не будеш давати дарунка за розпусту!

І заспокоїться Моя лютість на тебе, і відійде від тебе Моя заздрість, і я заспокоюся, і не буду вже гніватися.

За те, що ти не пам́ятала про дні своєї молодости, і гнівила Мене всім тим, то й Я ось поверну дорогу твою на твою голову, говорить Господь Бог, щоб не чинила ти розпусти після всіх гидот своїх!…

Ось кожен приповістник говоритиме про тебе приповістку, кажучи: Яка мати така її донька!

Ти дочка своєї матері, що покинула свого чоловіка та своїх синів, і ти сестра своїх сестер, що покидали своїх чоловіків та своїх синів.
Мати ваша хіттейка, а ваш батько амореєць!

А старша сестра твоя Самарія та дочки її, що сидять по лівиці твоїй, а сестра твоя, менша від тебе, що сидить по правиці твоїй це Содома та дочки її.

А ти хіба не ходила їхніми дорогами й не робила за їхніми гидотами?
Мало бракувало, і зіпсулася б ти більше від них на всіх своїх дорогах!

Як живий Я, говорить Господь Бог, не зробила Содома, сестра твоя, вона та дочки її, як зробила ти та твої дочки!

Ось оце була провина твоєї сестри Содоми: пиха, ситість їжі та преспокійний спокій були в неї та в її дочок, а руки вбогого та бідного вона не зміцняла.

І запишались вони, і робили гидоти перед Моїм обличчям.
І Я їх відкинув, як побачив оце.

А Самарія не нагрішила й половини гріхів твоїх, та ти побільшила гидоти свої більш від них, і оправдала сестер своїх усіма своїми гидотами, які ти зробила.

Тож носи свою ганьбу ти, що чинила її для своїх сестер, через твої гріхи, якими гидоти чинила ти більше за них, вони будуть справедливіші за тебе!
І також посоромся, і носи свій сором за твоє всправедливлення своїх сестер!

І поверну Я їхню долю, долю Содоми та дочок її, і Самарію та дочок її, і поверну долю твою серед них,

щоб носила ти свій сором, і соромилася всього того, що ти наробила, потішаючи їх.

А твої сестри, Содома та дочки її, вернуться до свого попереднього стану, і Самарія та дочки її вернуться до свого попереднього стану, і ти та дочки твої вернетесь до свого попереднього стану.

І не була сестра твоя Содома згадувана в устах твоїх за днів твоїх гордощів,

І ти згадаєш про свої дороги й засоромишся, коли ти візьмеш сестер своїх, старших від тебе, разом з меншими від тебе і дам їх тобі за дочок, але не з твого заповіту.

І відновлю Я Свого заповіта з тобою, і ти пізнаєш, що Я Господь,

щоб згадала ти й засоромилася, і не могла більше відкривати уста перед ганьбою своєю, коли прощу тобі все, що ти наробила, говорить Господь Бог.
