that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).

Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,

and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness.

Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazezon Tamar.

And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim

against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar--four kings against five.

Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains.

Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.

They also took Lot, Abraḿs brotheŕs son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were allies with Abram.

Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.

So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the Kinǵs Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High.

And he blessed him and said: «Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;

And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.» And he gave him a tithe of all.

Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, «Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.»

But Abram said to the king of Sodom, «I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,

that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, «I have made Abram rich́--

except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.»

Um diese Zeit brach im Land Kanaan ein Krieg aus. Vier Großkönige – Amrafel von Schinar, Arjoch von Ellasar, Kedor-Laomer von Elam sowie Tidal, der König vieler Völker – zogen ins Feld gegen die fünf Stadtkönige Bera von Sodom, Birscha von Gomorra, Schinab von Adma, Schemeber von Zebojim und den König von Bela, das jetzt Zoar heißt.

Diese fünf hatten sich zusammengeschlossen und waren mit ihren Truppen in das Siddimtal gezogen, wo heute das Tote Meer ist.

Zwölf Jahre lang hatten sie unter der Oberherrschaft Kedor-Laomers gestanden, im dreizehnten waren sie von ihm abgefallen.

Jetzt im vierzehnten Jahr rückten Kedor-Laomer und die mit ihm verbündeten Großkönige heran. Zuerst besiegten sie die Rafaïter in Aschterot-Karnajim, die Susiter in Ham, die Emiter in der Ebene von Kirjatajim

und die Horiter in ihrem ganzen Gebiet vom Bergland Seïr bis hinunter nach El-Paran am Rand der Wüste.

Von dort wandten sie sich nordwärts nach En-Mischpat, das jetzt Kadesch heißt, und verwüsteten das ganze Gebiet der Amalekiter und die von Amoritern besiedelte Gegend von Hazezon-Tamar.

Im Siddimtal stellten sich ihnen die abgefallenen Stadtkönige entgegen;

mit vier Großkönigen mussten es die fünf kleinen Stadtkönige aufnehmen.

Nun ist das Siddimtal voll von Asphaltgruben. In diese Gruben fielen die Könige von Sodom und Gomorra, als sie sich zur Flucht wandten; die anderen Stadtkönige flohen auf das Gebirge.

Die Großkönige plünderten Sodom und Gomorra und nahmen alle Lebensmittelvorräte mit und alles, was wertvoll war.

Auch Abrams Neffen Lot, der damals in Sodom wohnte, schleppten sie mit, dazu seinen ganzen Besitz.

Einer von denen, die sich retten konnten, kam zu dem Hebräer Abram und berichtete ihm alles. Abram wohnte damals bei den Eichen des Amoriters Mamre, der war ein Bruder von Eschkol und Aner; alle drei waren mit Abram verbündet.

Als Abram hörte, dass sein Neffe in Gefangenschaft geraten war, rief er seine kampferprobten Leute zusammen, 318 zuverlässige Männer, die alle in seinen Zelten geboren worden waren. Mit ihnen jagte er hinter den siegreichen Königen her.

In der Gegend von Dan holte er sie ein.

Er teilte seine Männer in zwei Gruppen, überfiel die vier Könige bei Nacht, schlug sie in die Flucht und verfolgte sie bis nach Hoba nördlich von Damaskus.

Er nahm ihnen die ganze Beute ab und befreite seinen Neffen Lot samt den verschleppten Frauen und den übrigen Gefangenen.

Als Abram nach seinem Sieg über Kedor-Laomer und die anderen Großkönige heimkehrte, zog ihm der König von Sodom entgegen ins Schawetal, das jetzt Königstal heißt.

Auch Melchisedek, der König von Salem, kam dorthin und brachte Brot und Wein. Melchisedek diente dem höchsten Gott als Priester.

Er segnete Abram und sagte zu ihm: »Glück und Segen schenke dir der höchste Gott, der Himmel und Erde geschaffen hat!

Der höchste Gott sei dafür gepriesen, dass er dir den Sieg über deine Feinde gegeben hat!«

Abram aber gab Melchisedek den zehnten Teil von allem, was er den Königen abgenommen hatte.

Der König von Sodom sagte zu Abram: »Gib mir meine Leute zurück, alles andere kannst du behalten!«

Aber Abram erwiderte: »Ich schwöre beim HERRN, dem höchsten Gott, der Himmel und Erde gemacht hat:

Ich behalte nichts von dem, was dir gehört, auch nicht einen Faden oder Schuhriemen! Gott ist mein Zeuge! Du sollst nicht sagen können: ́Ich habe Abram reich gemacht.́

Ich nehme nichts für mich. Nur das nehme ich von dir an, was meine Leute verzehrt haben und was von der Beute auf meine Bundesgenossen Aner, Eschkol und Mamre entfällt. Die sollen ihren Anteil behalten.«
