There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.

Then the LORD appeared to him and said: «Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.

Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.»

So Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, «She is my sister»; for he was afraid to say, «She is my wife,» because he thought, «lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold.»

Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife.

Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, «Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, «She is my sisteŕ?» Isaac said to him, «Because I said, «Lest I die on account of her.́

And Abimelech said, «What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.»

So Abimelech charged all his people, saying, «He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.»

Then Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him.

The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;

for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him.

Now the Philistines had stopped up all the wells which his fatheŕs servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, and they had filled them with earth.

And Abimelech said to Isaac, «Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.»

Then Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.

Also Isaaćs servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there.

But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaaćs herdsmen, saying, «The water is ours.» So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him.

Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah.

And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, «For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.»

Then he went up from there to Beersheba.

And the LORD appeared to him the same night and said, «I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abrahaḿs sake.»

So he built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaaćs servants dug a well.

Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army.

And Isaac said to them, «Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?»

But they said, «We have certainly seen that the LORD is with you. So we said, «Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you,

that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.»́

So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

Then they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

It came to pass the same day that Isaaćs servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, «We have found water.»

So he called it Shebah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

Вопроси́ша же му́жiе мѣ́ста того́ о Реве́кцѣ женѣ́ его́, и рече́: сестра́ ми е́сть. Убоя́ся бо рещи́, я́ко жена́ ми е́сть, да не когда́ убiю́тъ его́ му́жiе мѣ́ста того́ Реве́кки ра́ди, поне́же бѣ́ доброзра́чна.

Бы́сть же мно́го вре́мя та́мо: и прини́кнувъ Авимеле́хъ ца́рь Гера́рскiй окно́мъ, ви́дѣ Исаа́ка игра́юща съ Реве́ккою жено́ю свое́ю.

Призва́ же Авимеле́хъ Исаа́ка и рече́ ему́: у́бо жена́ твоя́ е́сть? Почто́ ре́клъ еси́, я́ко сестра́ ми е́сть? Рече́ же ему́ Исаа́къ: рѣ́хъ бо, да не умру́ ея́ ра́ди.

Рече́ же ему́ Авимеле́хъ: что́ сiе́ сотвори́лъ еси́ на́мъ? Вма́лѣ не бы́сть нѣ́кто от ро́да моего́ съ жено́ю твое́ю, и наве́лъ бы еси́ на ны́ невѣ́дѣнiе.

И возвы́сися человѣ́къ, и преуспѣва́я бо́лшiй быва́ше, до́ндеже вели́къ бы́сть зѣло́.

и вся́ кла́дязи, я́же ископа́ша раби́ отца́ его́, во вре́мя отца́ его́, загради́ша я́ Филисти́мляне и напо́лниша ты́я земле́ю.

Рече́ же Авимеле́хъ ко Исаа́ку: отиди́ от на́съ, я́ко си́льнѣйшiй сотвори́лся еси́ от на́съ зѣло́.

И отъи́де отту́ду Исаа́къ и обита́ въ де́бри Гера́рстѣй, и всели́ся та́мо.

И па́ки Исаа́къ ископа́ кла́дязи во́дныя, я́же ископа́ша раби́ Авраа́ма отца́ его́, и загради́ша ты́я Филисти́мляне, по уме́ртвiи Авраа́ма отца́ его́: и прозва́ и́мъ имена́, по имена́мъ, и́миже прозва́ Авраа́мъ оте́цъ его́.

И ископа́ша раби́ Исаа́ковы въ де́бри Гера́рстѣй, и обрѣто́ша та́мо кла́дязь воды́ жи́вы.

И пря́хуся па́стырiе Гера́рстiи съ па́стырьми Исаа́ковыми, глаго́люще: на́ша е́сть вода́. И прозва́ и́мя кла́дязю тому́ Оби́да: оби́дяху бо его́.

Отше́дъ же отту́ду Исаа́къ, ископа́ кла́дязь другі́й. Пря́хуся же и о то́мъ: и прозва́ и́мя ему́ Вражда́.

Отше́дъ же отту́ду, ископа́ кла́дязь другі́й. И не пря́хуся о то́мъ, и прозва́ и́мя ему́ Простра́нство, глаго́ля: я́ко ны́нѣ распространи́ Госпо́дь на́мъ и возрасти́ на́съ на земли́.

Взы́де же отту́ду ко кла́дязю Кля́твенному:

и яви́ся ему́ Госпо́дь въ ту́ но́щь и рече́: А́зъ е́смь Бо́гъ Авраа́ма отца́ твоего́, не бо́йся, съ тобо́ю бо е́смь: и благословлю́ тя, и умно́жу сѣ́мя твое́ Авраа́ма ра́ди отца́ твоего́.

И созда́ та́мо же́ртвенникъ, и призва́ и́мя Госпо́дне: и поста́ви та́мо ски́нiю свою́: ископа́ша же та́мо раби́ Исаа́ковы кла́дязь въ де́бри Гера́рстѣй.

И Авимеле́хъ прiи́де къ нему́ от Гера́ръ, и Охоза́ѳъ невѣстоводи́тель его́, и Фихо́лъ воево́да си́лъ его́.

И рече́ и́мъ Исаа́къ: вску́ю прiидо́сте ко мнѣ́? Вы́ же возненави́дѣсте мене́ и отсла́сте мя́ от себе́.

И прозва́ его́ Кля́тва. Сего́ ра́ди прозва́ и́мя гра́ду о́ному кла́дязь Кля́твенный, да́же до дне́шняго дне́.

Wieder einmal, wie schon zur Zeit Abrahams, brach über das Land eine Hungersnot herein. Isaak suchte bei dem Philisterkönig Abimelech in Gerar Zuflucht.

Der HERR war ihm erschienen und hatte gesagt: »Geh nicht nach Ägypten! Ich will dir sagen, wo du bleiben kannst.

Lebe hier im Land Kanaan als Fremder, dann werde ich dir beistehen und dich segnen. Dir und deinen Nachkommen will ich alle diese Landstriche geben. Ich halte den Eid, den ich deinem Vater Abraham geschworen habe.

Ich mache deine Nachkommen so zahlreich wie die Sterne am Himmel und gebe ihnen dieses ganze Land. Bei allen Völkern der Erde wird man dann zueinander sagen: ́Gott segne dich wie die Nachkommen Isaaks!́

Das ist der Lohn dafür, dass Abraham meinem Befehl gehorcht und alle meine Gebote und Weisungen befolgt hat.«

So blieb Isaak in Gerar.

Als die Männer dort seine Frau Rebekka sahen, fragten sie ihn nach ihr. Da fürchtete er, sie könnten ihn ihretwegen umbringen, weil sie so schön war. Deshalb sagte er: »Sie ist meine Schwester.«

Isaak lebte mit seiner Frau schon längere Zeit in Gerar, da schaute König Abimelech eines Tages zum Fenster hinaus und sah, wie Isaak und Rebekka sich umarmten.

Er rief ihn zu sich und hielt ihm vor: »Sie ist ja deine Frau! Warum hast du sie für deine Schwester ausgegeben?«

»Ich hatte Angst, es würde mich sonst das Leben kosten«, erwiderte Isaak.

Doch Abimelech sagte: »In welche Gefahr hast du uns da gebracht! Wie leicht hätte es geschehen können, dass einer meiner Männer mit ihr geschlafen hätte! Dann hättest du uns in schwere Schuld gestürzt.«

Allen seinen Leuten ließ Abimelech bekannt geben: »Wer diesen Mann oder seine Frau antastet, muss sterben.«

Isaak säte in Gerar Getreide aus und erntete in diesem Jahr hundertmal so viel, wie er gesät hatte. Denn der HERR segnete ihn.

Auch weiterhin vermehrte sich Isaaks Besitz, und er wurde ein sehr reicher Mann.

Er hatte so viele Schafe, Ziegen, Rinder und Knechte, dass die Philister neidisch wurden.

Deshalb schütteten sie alle Brunnen zu, die von den Knechten seines Vaters Abraham gegraben worden waren.

Abimelech sagte zu Isaak: »Zieh von uns weg! Du bist uns zu mächtig geworden.«

So verließ Isaak das Stadtgebiet und schlug sein Lager im Tal von Gerar auf.

Er legte die Brunnen wieder frei, die von den Leuten Abrahams gegraben und nach dessen Tod von den Philistern zugeschüttet worden waren, und er gab ihnen wieder die alten Namen, die sein Vater ihnen gegeben hatte.

Als die Knechte Isaaks im Tal gruben, stießen sie auf eine Quelle.

Die Hirten von Gerar machten den Hirten Isaaks die Quelle streitig und erklärten: »Das Wasser gehört uns!« Deshalb nannte Isaak den Brunnen Esek (Streit).

Seine Leute gruben einen weiteren Brunnen, und auch um den gab es Streit; deshalb nannte er ihn Sitna (Zank).

Dann zog er von dort weg und grub an anderer Stelle einen Brunnen. Diesmal gab es keinen Streit. Da sagte Isaak: »Jetzt hat der HERR uns freien Raum gegeben; hier werden wir uns ausbreiten können.« Deshalb nannte er den Brunnen Rehobot (Weite).

Von da aus zog Isaak weiter nach Beerscheba.

In der ersten Nacht erschien ihm dort der HERR und sagte zu ihm: »Ich bin der Gott deines Vaters Abraham. Hab keine Angst; ich stehe dir bei! Ich will dich segnen und dir viele Nachkommen geben, wie ich es meinem Diener Abraham versprochen habe.«

Isaak baute an der Stelle einen Altar und rief im Gebet den Namen des HERRN an. Er schlug sein Lager dort auf, und seine Knechte begannen einen Brunnen zu graben.

Da besuchte ihn König Abimelech aus Gerar mit seinem Ratgeber Ahusat und seinem Heerführer Pichol.

»Warum kommt ihr zu mir?«, fragte Isaak. »Ihr habt mich doch wie einen Feind behandelt und von euch fortgejagt!«

Sie antworteten: »Wir haben erkannt, dass der HERR auf deiner Seite steht. Deshalb haben wir gedacht, wir sollten einen Friedensvertrag schließen und ihn durch einen feierlichen Eid bekräftigen.

Versprich uns, dass du uns keinen Schaden zufügen willst! Wir haben dir ja auch nichts zuleide getan; wir haben dir nur Gutes erwiesen und dich in Frieden ziehen lassen. Es ist offenkundig, dass der HERR dich segnet.«

Isaak ließ ein Festmahl zubereiten und sie aßen und tranken miteinander.

Am anderen Morgen schworen sie einen feierlichen Eid, sich gegenseitig keinen Schaden zu tun. Isaak verabschiedete die drei und ließ sie in Frieden ziehen.

Am selben Tag kamen die Knechte, die den Brunnen gruben, zu Isaak und berichteten: »Wir sind auf Wasser gestoßen!«

Da nannte Isaak den Brunnen Schiba (Schwur). Deshalb heißt der Ort bis zum heutigen Tag Beerscheba.

Als Esau 40 Jahre alt war, heiratete er zwei Hetiterinnen, Jehudit, die Tochter von Beeri, und Basemat, die Tochter von Elon.

Darüber waren Isaak und Rebekka sehr bekümmert.
