Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.

Then the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh with a great army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. And he stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fulleŕs Field.

And Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to him.

Then the Rabshakeh said to them, «Say now to Hezekiah, «Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: «What confidence is this in which you trust?

I say you speak of having plans and power for war; but they are mere words. Now in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?

Look! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

«But if you say to me, «We trust in the LORD our God,́ is it not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, «You shall worship before this altaŕ?»́

Now therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses--if you are able on your part to put riders on them!

How then will you repel one captain of the least of my masteŕs servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

Have I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, «Go up against this land, and destroy it.»́

Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, «Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.»

But the Rabshakeh said, «Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?»

Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in Hebrew, and said, «Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!

Thus says the king: «Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you;

nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, «The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.»́

Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: «Make peace with me by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;

until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, «The LORD will deliver us.» Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria?

Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand?

Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their countries from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?»́

But they held their peace and answered him not a word; for the kinǵs commandment was, «Do not answer him.»

Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

И было в четырнадцатый год царя Езекии, пошел Сеннахирим, царь Ассирийский, против всех укрепленных городов Иудеи и взял их.

И послал царь Ассирийский из Лахиса в Иерусалим к царю Езекии Рабсака с большим войском; и он остановился у водопровода верхнего пруда на дороге поля белильничьего.

И вышел к нему Елиаким, сын Хелкиин, начальник дворца, и Севна писец, и Иоах, сын Асафов, дееписатель.

И сказал им Рабсак: скажите Езекии: так говорит царь великий, царь Ассирийский: что это за упование, на которое ты уповаешь?

Я думаю, что это одни пустые слова, а для войны нужны совет и сила: итак на кого ты уповаешь, что отложился от меня?

Вот, ты думаешь опереться на Египет, на эту трость надломленную, которая, если кто опрется на нее, войдет тому в руку и проколет ее! Таков фараон, царь Египетский, для всех уповающих на него.

А если скажешь мне: «на Господа, Бога нашего мы уповаем», то на того ли, которого высоты и жертвенники отменил Езекия и сказал Иуде и Иерусалиму: «пред сим только жертвенником поклоняйтесь»?

Итак вступи в союз с господином моим, царем Ассирийским; я дам тебе две тысячи коней; можешь ли достать себе всадников на них?

И как ты хочешь заставить отступить вождя, одного из малейших рабов господина моего, надеясь на Египет, ради колесниц и коней?

доколе я не приду и не возьму вас в землю такую же, как и ваша земля, в землю хлеба и вина, в землю плодов и виноградников.

Итак да не обольщает вас Езекия, говоря: «Господь спасет нас». Спасли ли боги народов, каждый свою землю, от руки царя Ассирийского?

Где боги Емафа и Арпада? Где боги Сепарваима? Спасли ли они Самарию от руки моей?

Который из всех богов земель сих спас землю свою от руки моей? Так неужели спасет Господь Иерусалим от руки моей?

Но они молчали и не отвечали ему ни слова, потому что от царя дано было приказание: не отвечайте ему.

И пришел Елиаким, сын Хелкиин, начальник дворца, и Севна писец, и Иоах, сын Асафов, дееписатель, к Езекии в разодранных одеждах и пересказали ему слова Рабсака.

Aconteció en el año catorce del rey Ezequías, que Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, subió contra todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá y las tomó.

El rey de Asiria envió al copero mayor con un gran ejército desde Laquis a Jerusalén contra el rey Ezequías, y acampó junto al acueducto del estanque de arriba, en el camino de la heredad del Lavador.

Y salió a él Eliaquim hijo de Hilcías, el mayordomo; Sebna, el escriba, y Joa hijo de Asaf, el canciller,

a los cuales dijo el copero mayor:

—Decid ahora a Ezequías: El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice así: “¿Qué confianza es ésta en que te apoyas?

Yo digo que la táctica y el poderío para la guerra, de los que tú hablas, no son más que palabras vacías. Ahora bien, ¿en quién confías para que te rebeles contra mí?

He aquí que confías en ese bastón de caña astillada, en Egipto, en el cual si alguien se apoya, se le clavará en la mano y se la atravesará. Tal es el faraón, el rey de Egipto, para con todos los que en él confían.

Y si me decís: ‘En Jehová, nuestro Dios, confiamos’, ¿acaso no es éste aquel cuyos lugares altos y cuyos altares hizo quitar Ezequías, y dijo a Judá y a Jerusalén: ‘Delante de este altar adoraréis’?”

Ahora, pues, yo te ruego que hagas un trato con el rey de Asiria, mi señor: Yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú puedes dar jinetes que los monten.

¿Cómo, pues, podrás resistir a un capitán, al menor de los siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto con sus carros y sus jinetes?

¿Acaso vine yo ahora a esta tierra para destruirla sin permiso de Jehová? Fue Jehová quien me dijo: “Sube a esta tierra y destrúyela.”

Entonces dijeron Eliaquim, Sebna y Joa al copero mayor:

—Te rogamos que hables a tus siervos en arameo, porque nosotros lo entendemos; y no hables con nosotros en la lengua de Judá, porque lo oye el pueblo que está sobre el muro.

Dijo el copero mayor:

—¿Acaso me envió mi señor a que dijera estas palabras a ti y a tu señor, y no a los hombres que están sobre el muro, expuestos a comer su estiércol y beber su orina lo mismo que vosotros?

Entonces el copero mayor se puso en pie y gritó a gran voz en la lengua de Judá, diciendo:

—¡Oíd las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria!

El rey dice así: “No os engañe Ezequías, porque no os podrá librar.

Ni os haga Ezequías confiar en Jehová, diciendo: ‘Ciertamente Jehová nos librará; no será entregada esta ciudad en manos del rey de Asiria.’

¡No escuchéis a Ezequías!, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: ‘Haced conmigo la paz y salid a mí; y coma cada uno de su viña, cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual las aguas de su pozo,

hasta que yo venga y os lleve a una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas.’

Mirad que no os engañe Ezequías diciendo: ‘Jehová nos librará.’ ¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las naciones ha librado su tierra de manos del rey de Asiria?

¿Dónde está el dios de Hamat y de Arfad? ¿Dónde está el dios de Sefarvaim? ¿Libraron ellos a Samaria de mis manos?

¿Qué dios hay entre los dioses de estas tierras que haya librado su tierra de mis manos, para que Jehová libre de mis manos a Jerusalén?”

Pero ellos callaron, no le respondieron palabra, porque el rey así lo había mandado, diciendo: «No le respondáis.»

Entonces Eliaquim hijo de Hilcías, el mayordomo; Sebna, el escriba, y Joa hijo de Asaf, el canciller, vinieron a Ezequías, rasgados sus vestidos, y le contaron las palabras del copero mayor.
