Then Job answered and said:

«Even today my complaint is bitter; My hand is listless because of my groaning.

Oh, that I knew where I might find Him, That I might come to His seat!

I would present my case before Him, And fill my mouth with arguments.

I would know the words which He would answer me, And understand what He would say to me.

Would He contend with me in His great power? No! But He would take note of me.

There the upright could reason with Him, And I would be delivered forever from my Judge.

«Look, I go forward, but He is not there, And backward, but I cannot perceive Him;

When He works on the left hand, I cannot behold Him; When He turns to the right hand, I cannot see Him.

But He knows the way that I take; When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside.

I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food.

«But He is unique, and who can make Him change? And whatever His soul desires, that He does.

For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such things are with Him.

Therefore I am terrified at His presence; When I consider this, I am afraid of Him.

For God made my heart weak, And the Almighty terrifies me;

Because I was not cut off from the presence of darkness, And He did not hide deep darkness from my face.

Отвѣща́въ же и́овъ, рече́:

вѣ́мъ у́бо, я́ко изъ руки́ моея́ обличе́нiе мое́ е́сть, и рука́ его́ тяжка́ бы́сть па́че моего́ воздыха́нiя.

Кто́ у́бо увѣ́сть, я́ко обря́щу его́ и прiиду́ ко кончи́нѣ?

И реку́ мо́й су́дъ, уста́ же моя́ испо́лню обличе́нiя,

уразумѣ́ю же изцѣле́нiя, я́же ми́ рече́тъ, и ощущу́, что́ ми возвѣсти́тъ.

И а́ще со мно́гою крѣ́постiю на́йдетъ на мя́, посе́мъ же не воспрети́тъ ми́.

И́стина бо и обличе́нiе от него́: да изведе́тъ же въ коне́цъ су́дъ мо́й.

А́ще бо во пе́рвыхъ пойду́, ктому́ нѣ́смь: въ послѣ́днихъ же, ка́ко вѣ́мъ его́?

ошу́юю творя́щу ему́, и не разумѣ́хъ: обложи́тъ одесну́ю, и не узрю́.

Вѣ́сть бо уже́ пу́ть мо́й, искуси́ же мя́ я́ко зла́то.

Изы́ду же въ за́повѣдехъ его́, пути́ бо его́ сохрани́хъ, и не уклоню́ся от за́повѣдiй его́

и не преступлю́, въ нѣ́дрѣхъ же мои́хъ сокры́хъ глаго́лы его́.

А́ще же и са́мъ суди́лъ та́ко, кто́ есть рекі́й проти́ву ему́? са́мъ бо восхотѣ́ и сотвори́.

Сего́ ра́ди о не́мъ тре́петенъ бы́хъ, наказу́емь же попеко́хся о не́мъ:

сего́ ра́ди от лица́ его́ потщу́ся, поучу́ся и убою́ся от него́.

И Госпо́дь умягчи́лъ се́рдце мое́, и Вседержи́тель потща́ся о мнѣ́:

не вѣ́дѣхъ бо, я́ко на́йдетъ на мя́ тма́, предъ лице́мъ же мои́мъ покры́етъ мра́къ.

И отвечал Иов, и сказал:

«И ныне прекословит моя речь; тяжела Его рука над стоном моим!

О, если бы я мог найти Его, мог перед престолом Его стать!

Я изложил бы перед Ним дело мое и доводами наполнил мои уста;

хотел бы я знать, что Он скажет мне, изведать, что Он ответит мне.

В полноте ли мощи Он вел бы спор? О нет! Только б Он призрел на меня!

Тогда правый возмог бы судиться с Ним; получил бы я свободу навек.

Вот, к востоку иду, и нет Его; к западу – не примечаю Его;

на севере ль Он действует – не вижу Его; таится ли на юге – не могу усмотреть!

Он же ведает мой путь; пусть, как злато, плавит меня – я чист!

Стопа моя держалась Его стези, путь Его соблюл я, не отклонясь,

от заповеди уст Его не отступил, в груди моей сокрыл Его слова.

Но Он решил – кто Его отклонит? Он делает, как хочет Его душа.

Так, Он исполнит Свой приговор; и мало ли что еще у Него на уме!

Поэтому боюсь я лика Его; как поразмыслю, страшно мне!

Да, расслабил сердце мое Бог, и Крепкий ужасом поразил меня;

ибо я поглощен этой мглой, и мрак покрывает мое лицо!

«Nunc quoque in amaritu tudine est querela mea, et manus eius aggravata est super gemitum meum.

Quis mihi tribuat, ut cognoscam et inveniam illum et veniam usque ad solium eius?

Ponam coram eo iudicium et os meum replebo increpationibus,

ut sciam verba, quae mihi respondeat, et intellegam quid loquatur mihi.

Num multa fortitudine contendet mecum? Non! Ipse tantum audiat!

Tunc iustus disceptabit cum illo, et ego evaderem in perpetuo a iudice meo.

Si ad orientem iero, non apparet; si ad occidentem, non intellegam eum.

Si ad sinistram pergam, non apprehendam eum; si me vertam ad dexteram, non videbo illum.

Ipse vero scit viam meam, et, si probaverit me, quasi aurum egrediar.

Vestigia eius secutus est pes meus, viam eius custodivi et non declinavi ex ea.

A mandatis labiorum eius non recessi et in sinu meo abscondi verba oris eius.

Ipse enim solus est, et quis repellet eum? Et anima eius, quodcumque voluit, hoc fecit.

Cum expleverit in me voluntatem suam, et alia multa similia praesto sunt ei;

et idcirco a facie eius turbatus sum et considerans eum timore sollicitor.
