But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the LORD burned against the children of Israel.

Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, «Go up and spy out the country.» So the men went up and spied out Ai.

And they returned to Joshua and said to him, «Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few.»

So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai.

And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore the hearts of the people melted and became like water.

Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.

And Joshua said, «Alas, Lord GOD, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all--to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!

O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies?

For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?»

So the LORD said to Joshua: «Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face?

Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.

Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.

Get up, sanctify the people, and say, «Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the LORD God of Israel: «There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.»

In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which the LORD takes shall come according to families; and the family which the LORD takes shall come by households; and the household which the LORD takes shall come man by man.

Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.»́

So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.

He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken.

Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

Now Joshua said to Achan, «My son, I beg you, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession to Him, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.»

And Achan answered Joshua and said, «Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I have done:

When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.»

So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.

And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.

Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor.

And Joshua said, «Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day.» So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.

Then they raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.

Но сыны Израилевы сделали [великое] преступление [и взяли] из заклятого. Ахан, сын Хармия, сына Завдия, сына Зары, из колена Иудина, взял из заклятого, и гнев Господень возгорелся на сынов Израиля.

Иисус из Иерихона послал людей в Гай, что близ Беф-Авена, с восточной стороны Вефиля, и сказал им: пойдите, осмотрите землю. Они пошли и осмотрели Гай.

И возвратившись к Иисусу, сказали ему: не весь народ пусть идет, а пусть пойдет около двух тысяч или около трех тысяч человек, и поразят Гай; всего народа не утруждай туда, ибо их мало [там].

Итак пошло туда из народа около трех тысяч человек, но они обратились в бегство от жителей Гайских;

жители Гайские убили из них до тридцати шести человек, и преследовали их от ворот до Севарим и разбили их на спуске с горы; отчего сердце народа растаяло и стало, как вода.

Иисус разодрал одежды свои и пал лицем своим на землю пред ковчегом Господним и лежал до самого вечера, он и старейшины Израилевы, и посыпали прахом головы свои.

И сказал Иисус: о, Господи Владыка! для чего Ты перевел народ сей чрез Иордан, дабы предать нас в руки Аморреев и погубить нас? о, если бы мы остались и жили за Иорданом!

О, Господи! что сказать мне после того, как Израиль обратил тыл врагам своим?

Хананеи и все жители земли услышат и окружат нас и истребят имя наше с земли. И что сделаешь тогда имени Твоему великому?

Господь сказал Иисусу: встань, для чего ты пал на лице твое?

Израиль согрешил, и преступили они завет Мой, который Я завещал им; и взяли из заклятого, и украли, и утаили, и положили между своими вещами;

за то сыны Израилевы не могли устоять пред врагами своими и обратили тыл врагам своим, ибо они подпали заклятию; не буду более с вами, если не истребите из среды вашей заклятого.

Встань, освяти народ и скажи: освятитесь к утру, ибо так говорит Господь Бог Израилев: «заклятое среди тебя, Израиль; посему ты не можешь устоять пред врагами твоими, доколе не отдалишь от себя заклятого»;

Pero los hijos de Israel cometieron una infidelidad en cuanto al anatema, porque Acán hijo de Carmi, hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá, tomó algo del anatema, y la ira de Jehová se encendió contra los hijos de Israel.

Después Josué envió unos hombres desde Jericó a Hai, que estaba junto a Bet-avén, hacia el oriente de Bet-el, y les dijo: «Subid a reconocer la tierra.» Ellos subieron y reconocieron a Hai.

Al volver, dijeron a Josué: «Que no suba todo el pueblo; dos mil o tres mil hombres tomarán a Hai. No fatigues a todo el pueblo yendo allí, porque son pocos.»

Subieron allá del pueblo como tres mil hombres, los cuales huyeron delante de los de Hai.

Los de Hai les mataron a unos treinta y seis hombres, los persiguieron desde la puerta hasta Sebarim y los derrotaron en la bajada, por lo cual el corazón del pueblo desfalleció y se volvió como agua.

Entonces Josué rompió sus vestidos y se postró en tierra sobre su rostro delante del Arca de Jehová hasta caer la tarde, junto con los ancianos de Israel, y se echaron polvo sobre sus cabezas.

Josué decía:

—¡Ah, Señor Jehová! ¿Por qué hiciste pasar a este pueblo el Jordán, para entregarnos en manos de los amorreos y que nos destruyan? ¡Ojalá nos hubiéramos quedado al otro lado del Jordán!

¡Ay, Señor! ¿qué diré, ahora que Israel le ha vuelto la espalda a sus enemigos?

Porque los cananeos y todos los habitantes de la tierra se enterarán, nos rodearán y borrarán nuestro nombre de encima de la tierra. ¿Qué harás tú entonces por tu gran nombre?

Jehová respondió a Josué:

—¡Levántate! ¿Por qué te postras así sobre tu rostro?

Israel ha pecado, y aun han quebrantado mi pacto, el que yo les mandé. También han tomado algo del anatema, y hasta lo han robado, han mentido, y aun lo han guardado entre sus enseres.

Por esto los hijos de Israel no podrán hacer frente a sus enemigos, sino que delante de sus enemigos volverán la espalda, por cuanto han venido a ser anatema. No estaré más con vosotros si no hacéis desaparecer el anatema de en medio de vosotros.

Levántate, santifica al pueblo y di: “Santificaos para mañana, porque Jehová, el Dios de Israel, dice así: ‘Anatema hay en medio de ti, Israel; no podrás hacer frente a tus enemigos, hasta que hayáis quitado el anatema de en medio de vosotros.’”

Os acercaréis, pues, mañana por tribus; la tribu que Jehová señale, se acercará por familias; la familia que Jehová señale, se acercará por casas paternas, y la casa que Jehová señale, se acercará hombre por hombre.

El que sea sorprendido en posesión del anatema, será quemado, él y todo lo que tiene, por cuanto ha quebrantado el pacto de Jehová y ha cometido una infamia en Israel.

Josué, pues, levantándose de mañana, hizo acercar a Israel por tribus, y fue designada la tribu de Judá.

Hizo acercar a la tribu de Judá, y fue designada la familia de los de Zera; luego hizo que se acercaran las familias de los de Zera, y fue designado Zabdi.

Hizo acercar su casa hombre por hombre, y fue designado Acán hijo de Carmi hijo de Zabdi, hijo de Zera, de la tribu de Judá.

Entonces Josué dijo a Acán:

—Hijo mío, da gloria a Jehová, el Dios de Israel, dale alabanza y declárame ahora lo que has hecho; no me lo encubras.

Acán respondió a Josué:

—Verdaderamente yo he pecado contra Jehová, el Dios de Israel; he hecho así y así.

Pues yo vi entre los despojos un manto babilónico muy bueno, doscientos siclos de plata y un lingote de oro de cincuenta siclos de peso, lo cual codicié y tomé. Ahora está escondido bajo tierra en medio de mi tienda, y el dinero está debajo.

Entonces Josué envió mensajeros, los cuales fueron corriendo a la tienda, y en efecto, todo estaba escondido en su tienda, y el dinero debajo.

Lo tomaron de la tienda y lo llevaron ante Josué y todos los hijos de Israel, y lo pusieron delante de Jehová.

Entonces Josué, junto con todo Israel, tomaron a Acán hijo de Zera, el dinero, el manto, el lingote de oro, sus hijos, sus hijas, sus bueyes, sus asnos, sus ovejas, su tienda y todo cuanto tenía, y lo llevaron todo al valle de Acor.

Allí le dijo Josué:

—¿Por qué nos has turbado? Que Jehová te turbe en este día.

Y todos los israelitas los apedrearon, y los quemaron después de apedrearlos.

Sobre él levantaron un gran montón de piedras que permanece hasta hoy. Así Jehová se calmó del ardor de su ira. Por eso aquel lugar se llama el valle de Acor, hasta hoy.
