JUVENALIS

JUVENALIS, Patriarch of Jerusalem (?–458). Bishop from 422 to 458, his efforts at the Council of Chalcedon (q.v.) led to the elevation of his see to the status of patriarchate (q.v.) with jurisdiction over all of Palestine. His political and theological maneuvers during this period of fierce controversy over Christology (q.v.) led to uprisings in his diocese, particularly in response to his change of sides away from Dioscurus of Alexandria and toward the majority opinion of the council fathers.
