KARMIRIS, JOHN N

KARMIRIS, JOHN N., Greek lay theologian (5 November 1904– ). He studied at the universities of Athens, Bonn, and Berlin. One of the best-known and most respected systematic theologians of the Greek Church, Karmiris received his doctorate from the University of Athens in 1936, and has subsequently published consistently and voluminously. From 1939 to 1945 he was professor of dogmatic theology in the Theological Faculty at the University of Athens. Beginning in 1945 he was the general director of religions and king’s councilor at the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece. His works include, in Greek, a very valuable collection of source materials, The Dogmatic and Symbolic Monuments of the Orthodox Church (1952/3, 2 vols.), the Synopsis of the Dogmatic Teaching of the Orthodox Church (1959), Orthodox Ecclesiology (1973), as well as a number of monographs on selected theological themes and Church Fathers (q.v.). His works in English include A Synopsis of the Dogmatic Theology of the Orthodox Catholic Church (trans. 1973) and The Status and Ministry of the Laity in the Orthodox Church (soon to be released).
