SYMEON OF THESSALONICA
SYMEON OF THESSALONICA, archbishop, homilist (?–1429). One of the most important church figures of the early fifteenth century, he left behind a body of homilies, occasional works against heretics (including both Latins and those opposed to Gregory Palamas [q.v.]), and, of particular importance, liturgical commentaries (q.v.). The latter provides a uniquely valuable historical witness to the state of the Orthodox liturgy at the close of the Byzantine era (qq.v.).
