Hieratikon

JOHN A. MCGUCKIN

Greek for “Priest’s [Book]” (Slavonic, Sluzhebnik), referring to the collection of liturgical services (for which reason it is sometimes also referred to as the Liturgikon) edited to be of use particularly to the officiating priest (omitting the choir parts). It contains the priest’s prayers for Vespers, Matins, and the three main liturgies of St. Chrysostom, St. Basil, and the Presanctified of St. Gregory. Various editions of the Hieratikon also usually contain other materials, such as the calendar of the saints (Menaion), dismissal texts for various days, special Prokeimena or psalm verses for various feasts, and rubrics (instructions on liturgical form).
