And it shall be, on the day when you cross over the Jordan to the land which the LORD your God is giving you, that you shall set up for yourselves large stones, and whitewash them with lime.

You shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have crossed over, that you may enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, «a land flowing with milk and honey,́ just as the LORD God of your fathers promised you.

Therefore it shall be, when you have crossed over the Jordan, that on Mount Ebal you shall set up these stones, which I command you today, and you shall whitewash them with lime.

And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you shall not use an iron tool on them.

You shall build with whole stones the altar of the LORD your God, and offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God.

You shall offer peace offerings, and shall eat there, and rejoice before the LORD your God.

And you shall write very plainly on the stones all the words of this law.»

Then Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying, «Take heed and listen, O Israel: This day you have become the people of the LORD your God.

Therefore you shall obey the voice of the LORD your God, and observe His commandments and His statutes which I command you today.»

And Moses commanded the people on the same day, saying,

«These shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people, when you have crossed over the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin;

and these shall stand on Mount Ebal to curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

«And the Levites shall speak with a loud voice and say to all the men of Israel:

«Cursed is the one who makes a carved or molded image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.́ «And all the people shall answer and say, «Amen!́

Mose trat mit den Ältesten Israels vor das Volk und sagte: »Achtet stets auf alle Gebote, die ich euch heute gebe!

An dem Tag, an dem ihr den Jordan überschreitet, um in das Land zu ziehen, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch geben will, sollt ihr große Steine aufrichten, sie mit weißer Tünche bestreichen

und dieses ganze Gesetz darauf schreiben. Dann werdet ihr das Land in Besitz nehmen können, das der HERR euch geben will – ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt, wie er das euren Vorfahren versprochen hat.

Ihr sollt die Steine, nachdem ihr den Jordan überschritten habt, auf dem Berg Ebal aufstellen und mit Tünche bestreichen.

Dort sollt ihr auch einen Altar für den HERRN, euren Gott, bauen. Er muss aus unbehauenen Feldsteinen errichtet werden, die mit keinem eisernen Werkzeug in Berührung gekommen sind. Auf diesem Altar sollt ihr dem HERRN, eurem Gott, Brandopfer darbringen

und sollt dort Tiere für das Opfermahl schlachten und in Gegenwart des HERRN ein fröhliches Mahl halten.

Auf die getünchten Steine aber müsst ihr klar und deutlich alle Bestimmungen dieses Gesetzes schreiben.«

Umgeben von den Priestern aus dem Stamm Levi sagte Mose zu dem ganzen Volk: »Sei still und höre, Volk Israel! Heute bist du zum Volk des HERRN, deines Gottes, geworden.

Darum gehorche seinen Befehlen und befolge alle seine Gebote und Weisungen, die ich dir heute verkündet habe!«

Weiter sagte Mose an jenem Tag zu dem Volk:

»Wenn ihr den Jordan überschritten habt, sollen sich die Stämme Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar, Josef und Benjamin auf dem Berg Garizim aufstellen und die Stämme Ruben, Gad, Ascher, Sebulon, Dan und Naftali auf dem Berg Ebal. Die einen sollen Segenszusagen über das Volk ausrufen, die anderen Fluchandrohungen aussprechen.

Danach sollen die Leviten allen Männern Israels mit lauter Stimme zurufen:

́Fluch über jeden, der sich aus Holz oder Metall ein Gottesbild anfertigen lässt, ein Werk von Menschenhand, das dem HERRN zuwider ist, und es heimlich aufstellt.́ Und das ganze Volk sagt: ́Amen!́ (So sei es!)

́Fluch über jeden, der seinen Vater oder seine Mutter missachtet!́ Und das ganze Volk sagt: ́Amen!́

́Fluch über jeden, der den Grenzstein zwischen ihm und seinem Nachbarn verrückt!́ Und das ganze Volk sagt: ́Amen!́
