And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, «If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!

Why has the LORD brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?»

So they said to one another, «Let us select a leader and return to Egypt.»

Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes;

and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: «The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land.

If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, «a land which flows with milk and honey.́

Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them.»

And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel.

Then the LORD said to Moses: «How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?

I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.»

And Moses said to the LORD: «Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them,

and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, LORD, are among these people; that You, LORD, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying,

«Because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.́

And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying,

«The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.́

Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.»

Then the LORD said: «I have pardoned, according to your word;

but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD--

because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice,

they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it.

But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.

Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley; tomorrow turn and move out into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.»

And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

«How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me.

Say to them, «As I live,́ says the LORD, «just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you:

The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.

Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.

But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.

But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.

And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.

According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection.

I the LORD have spoken this. I will surely do so to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.»́

Now the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation complain against him by bringing a bad report of the land,

those very men who brought the evil report about the land, died by the plague before the LORD.

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, of the men who went to spy out the land.

Then Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.

And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, «Here we are, and we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised, for we have sinned!»

And Moses said, «Now why do you transgress the command of the LORD? For this will not succeed.

Do not go up, lest you be defeated by your enemies, for the LORD is not among you.

For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have turned away from the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.»

But they presumed to go up to the mountaintop. Nevertheless, neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed from the camp.

Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that mountain came down and attacked them, and drove them back as far as Hormah.

Die ganze Gemeinde Israel schrie laut auf vor Entsetzen und die Leute weinten die ganze Nacht.

Alle miteinander lehnten sich gegen Mose und Aaron auf, sie murrten und sagten: »Wären wir doch lieber in Ägypten gestorben oder unterwegs in der Wüste!

Warum will der HERR uns in dieses Land bringen? Wir werden im Kampf umkommen und unsere Frauen und kleinen Kinder werden den Feinden in die Hände fallen. Es wäre besser, wir kehrten wieder nach Ägypten zurück!«

Schon gaben einige die Parole aus: »Wir wählen einen neuen Anführer und gehen zurück nach Ägypten!«

Da warfen sich Mose und Aaron vor den versammelten Israeliten auf die Erde.

Josua und Kaleb aber, die zusammen mit den anderen das Land erkundet hatten, zerrissen ihre Kleider

und sagten zu der ganzen Gemeinde Israel: »Das Land, das wir erkundet haben, ist ein sehr gutes Land,

das von Milch und Honig überfließt! Wenn der HERR uns gut ist, wird er uns in dieses Land hineinbringen und es uns geben.

Lehnt euch nicht gegen ihn auf! Habt keine Angst vor den Bewohnern des Landes! Wir werden im Handumdrehen mit ihnen fertig. Sie sind von ihren Göttern verlassen, aber uns steht der HERR zur Seite. Habt also keine Angst vor ihnen!«

Aber die ganze Gemeinde wollte sie steinigen. Da erschien die Herrlichkeit des HERRN vor den Augen aller Israeliten über dem Heiligen Zelt.

Der HERR sagte zu Mose: »Wie lange will mich dieses Volk noch verhöhnen? Wie lange weigern sie sich noch, mir zu vertrauen? Habe ich ihnen nicht genug Beweise meiner Macht und Fürsorge gegeben?

Ich will sie an der Pest sterben lassen, ich will das ganze Volk ausrotten. Mit dir will ich neu beginnen und deine Nachkommen zu einem Volk machen, das noch größer und stärker ist als sie.«

Aber Mose erwiderte: »Was werden dann die Ägypter sagen? Sie haben gesehen, wie du dieses Volk durch deine Macht aus ihrem Land geführt und bis hierher gebracht hast.

Und was werden die Bewohner dieses Landes sagen? Sie haben gehört, dass du, HERR, selbst mitten unter uns bist, dass du mir Auge in Auge gegenübertrittst, dass deine Wolke über uns steht und dass du vor uns hergehst, bei Tag in einer Wolkensäule und in einer Feuersäule bei Nacht.

Und dann tötest du dieses ganze Volk auf einen Schlag! Die Völker, die von deinen Taten gehört haben, werden sagen:

́Er war zu schwach, um dieses Volk in das Land zu bringen, das er ihnen mit einem Eid versprochen hatte. Deshalb hat er sie in der Wüste abgeschlachtet.́

Ach Herr, lass doch deine Macht an uns sichtbar werden! Du hast uns zugesagt:

́Ich bin der HERR, ich habe Geduld, meine Güte ist grenzenlos. Ich vergebe Schuld und Auflehnung; aber ich lasse nicht alles ungestraft hingehen. Wenn sich jemand gegen mich wendet, dann bestrafe ich dafür noch seine Kinder und Enkel bis in die dritte und vierte Generation.́

Weil nun deine Güte so groß ist, darum vergib diesem Volk seine Schuld! Du hast ihm ja auch bisher vergeben während der ganzen Zeit, seit du es aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast!«

Der HERR antwortete: »Ich vergebe ihnen, weil du mich darum bittest.

Aber so gewiss ich lebe und meine Herrlichkeit die ganze Erde erfüllen wird:

Diese Männer werden nicht in das Land kommen, das ich ihren Vorfahren versprochen habe! Sie haben meine Herrlichkeit gesehen und die Wunder, die ich in Ägypten und in der Wüste getan habe, und trotzdem haben sie mich nun zehnmal auf die Probe gestellt und sich gegen mich aufgelehnt. Keiner von denen, die mich missachtet haben, wird das Land betreten.

Nur meinen Diener Kaleb will ich in das Land bringen, das er erkundet hat; seine Nachkommen sollen dort leben. Denn in ihm war ein anderer Geist, er ließ sich nicht beirren und hat mir vertraut.

In den Ebenen aber bleiben die Amalekiter und Kanaaniter wohnen.

Morgen kehrt ihr um und zieht wieder durch die Wüste, dem Schilfmeer zu.«

Der HERR sagte zu Mose und Aaron:

»Wie lange soll ich es noch hinnehmen, dass dieses eigensinnige Volk sich gegen mich auflehnt? Ich habe wohl gehört, wie sie gegen mich murren.

Richte ihnen meine Antwort aus! Sage zu ihnen:

́Ich, der HERR, schwöre euch: Was ihr da gesagt habt, lasse ich in Erfüllung gehen – so gewiss ich lebe!

In dieser Wüste sollt ihr sterben, alle wehrfähigen Männer von zwanzig Jahren an aufwärts. Das ist die Strafe dafür, dass ihr euch gegen mich aufgelehnt habt.

Keiner von euch soll in das Land kommen, das ich euch mit einem Eid zugesichert habe, mit Ausnahme von Kaleb und Josua.

Eure kleinen Kinder dagegen, von denen ihr gesagt habt: Sie werden den Feinden in die Hände fallen – die werde ich in das Land hineinbringen, das ihr verschmäht habt; genau sie werden es in Besitz nehmen.

Ihr aber werdet in dieser Wüste sterben.

Doch auch eure Söhne werden wegen eurer Untreue zu leiden haben: Noch vierzig Jahre lang müssen sie mit ihrem Vieh in der Wüste umherziehen, bis von eurer Generation keiner mehr am Leben ist.

Vierzig Tage lang habt ihr das Land erkundet; so sollt ihr nun vierzig Jahre lang, für jeden Tag ein Jahr, eure Schuld abbüßen. Dann merkt ihr, was für Folgen es hat, wenn jemand sich von mir abwendet.

Ich werde mein Wort nicht zurücknehmen. Keiner von euch soll aus dieser Wüste herauskommen; alle werden in ihr den Tod finden. Diese ganze böse Gemeinde, die sich gegen mich zusammengerottet hat, soll ihrer Strafe nicht entgehen.́«

Die Männer aber, die Mose ausgesandt hatte, um das Land zu erkunden, bestrafte der HERR auf der Stelle, sodass sie tot umfielen. Sie hatten nach ihrer Rückkehr schreckliche Dinge über das Land erzählt und so die ganze Gemeinde gegen Mose aufgewiegelt und zum Murren gegen ihn gebracht.

Nur Josua und Kaleb blieben verschont.

Mose sagte allen Israeliten die Antwort des HERRN. Da begann das Volk zu weinen und zu klagen.

Am anderen Morgen aber rüsteten sich die Männer Israels, um ins Bergland hinaufzuziehen. Sie sagten zu Mose: »Wir sind jetzt bereit! Wir wollen dem HERRN gehorchen und in das Land ziehen. Wir haben gestern unrecht getan.«

Aber Mose erwiderte: »Warum wollt ihr gegen den ausdrücklichen Befehl des HERRN handeln? Das kann nicht gut gehen.

Ich sage euch: Zieht nicht hinauf; denn der HERR wird nicht mit euch gehen! Die Feinde werden euch in die Flucht schlagen.

Die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter sind gerüstet und warten auf euch; ihr werdet alle umkommen. Ihr habt euch vom HERRN abgewandt; denkt nur nicht, dass er euch jetzt beistehen wird!«

Sie aber hatten es sich in den Kopf gesetzt, ins Bergland hinaufzuziehen. Mose ging nicht mit und auch die Bundeslade blieb im Lager.

Die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter, die das Bergland bewohnten, griffen sie von oben her an, schlugen sie in die Flucht und verfolgten sie bis nach Horma.
